Microsoft Update fails with error 0xC80001FE

Using Windows 2000, Microsoft Update fails with error 0xC80001FE. Searching
the MS knowledge base for this error number returns no hits and nothing is
mentioned on the troubleshooting page for Microsoft Update.

Can anyone offer any help?

0xC80001FE = unable to write to the log file

OK, now which log file is that a reference to ? Post the
WindowsUpdate.log located in the WINDOWS directory
Start > Run > type in

%windir%\windowsupdate.log
Click OK or press Enter
Copy&paste the last 40 or so lines into your reply, please.

The log file is about 1.4 MB and there's over 7 GB free disk space.

I tried the procedure in that response and it didn't work. I stopped
Automatic Updates, deleted the SoftwareDistribution folder, and ran "rundll32
C:\WINNT\system32\muweb.dll,LaunchMUSite" from the command line.

Microsoft update installed, launched, and gave me the same error code: 0xC80001FE.
