Check the Windows Installer Service - is it set to Manual?

I found it to be set to manual. I changed it to automatic. It still will not
    load updates.

Also check that the Automatic Updates service is set to Automatic and
that the Background Intelligent Transfer Service [BITS] is set to Manual.
The Windows Installer service need only be set to Manual.

Can not install the downloaded update still. If you have something else that
I can try, I am very much willing to try.

    Thanks.

I tried Dial-A-Fix tool and it fixed everything. If anybody wants to try it,
    just google it.

RE: I keep getting error code 0x80070426 when trying to update Win

Updating XP with SP2, I got error 0x80070426, at retry, I got error 0x8024D00C.
I went around error 0x8024D00C by following suggestion for this error code
in this forum: through "sesrvices.msc" and renaming SoftwareDistribution
    folder.

The second time I got error 0x80070426, I submitted the error report, and
got another suggestion back saying that the problem was caused by Internet
Explorer. The recommendation was to install high-priority updates but I had
    done that already.

So the next logical step was to update IE first, when attempting to update
to IE7 (I am using IE6 with its SP1) , the site asked for XP with SP2 !! So
now I am in a chicken and egg situation.

I tried the Dial-a-fix once but I did not know what I was doing: there was
a bunch of check boxes, and I didn't know what to check or uncheck.

    Any suggestion?
