Vista will not update, pls help.

Today Vista tried to update, but it says FAILED, Windows Update error 80070002

I followed all the advice i could find, and removed the temporary update
files that Windows uses to identify updates for your computer. Then removed
the temporary files, stopped the Windows Update service, deleted the
temporary update files, restarted the Windows Update service, and then tried
to check for Windows updates again.

I also tried the fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\ command

However, the same problem Windows Update error 80070002.

Security Update for Windows Vista (KB935807) and about another 7 updates
will not install, says they FAILED.

What can I do? Thanks.

I have this same problem on a Vista x64 system. I tried the solution for the
80070002 error found here ---->

This however does not work. I installed all the other updates that were
grouped with this one (3 others with 10 in total that would not go if this
one was included in the group) but this update will not install (KB935807
with error code 80070002).

Should I start a Windows Update support incident request too?

Also here, have logged a support incident from WU webpage.
I did find if I did a custom install and just deselcted KB935807, the rest
of the patches installed fine, seems to be just the one update causing
problems.

Yeah, I just manually installed the patch and cleared out the temp files.
Looks like its installed but Windows Update still thinks it isn’t. It’s still
broken, but I just did the "hide update" option. If your someone who really
does not want to risk it (As I understand it, it’s a fix for a vulnerability
in Windows Vista Firewall) just turn off Windows Firewall and install a third
party one until there is an actual fix for this.

I started a support ticket couldn't update KB935807 I'll see what they say,
I'm running Vista U Got the other updates to update one at a time.

i was having the same trouble - tried everything - i finally turned off user
account control and did the updates one by one - its the only way - update
Kb935807 would not install and prevented the update from completing - once i
hid this update the rest installed no problem.

To further waste your time as well as mine Valentino, in Vista you are well
aware of the fact that you can check which updates are installed on your
computer by -
Start button || Control Panel || Programs
Under Programs and Features - click View installed updates.
This will confirm or otherwise if the update is installed.

As the update may still be cached in the softwaredistribution\download
folder from the previous attempt at auto updating, could be the reason why it
keeps re-appearing. Find it and remove it.

I'm sorry I tried to help you on my own time. I dont work for MS, I just
happen to be suffereing the same problem and had found a workaround posted on
another thread I thought may be useful. Please forgive me for posting and
trying to help you.

Yep no problem, I fully understand the patch frustration ;-)
Interestingly I got a MS response from the incident I logged via the WU
website very polite but not very helpful. Say I have corrupt svchost and need
log call with Vista team (which I'm guessing is chargeable), but yet its the
patch process that has highlighted the problem, so has the patch broken it,
or just showing the symptom?

Yes Chris, I can install all updates, but not the one mentioned.

I have also "hidden" the update for now.

But where is the solution from MS I wonder?

I don't know if MS does not understand the problem, or if it thinks it’s a
non-issue (or both). In the past, just removing the temp and cache would do
it. But we've tried it... Multiple times... (Or at least I have) It’s still
broken. It’s still an issue with us. It’s nothing to get upset about (or
sarcastic about), however it is very annoying unless you go "Oh forget it!"
and hide the update. I still have yet to see any worthwhile progress made on
the issue.

And Mat, thanks. Dont mind me, I am only human after all, and I get in low
moods sometimes like we all do. After rebooting 20+ times, it does get a
little frustrating, that's all.

Let's hope MS releases a solution soon.

I have spend months of wrestling and get just a tiny bitt fruutated too once
in a while, but up till now everything microsoft based works like a charm it
only needs some fixing once in a while;)

I am having the same exact problem. This is the first time with Vista that I
have had a problem with Windows Update. Definitely seems to be a Microsoft
problem so I hope they can tell us how to fix this. Following existing KB
articles has no effect.

Thanks for your advice, but this patch still won't install (logged in with
administrator privileges). I also tried to manually download and install it
w/o success. The event log shows 4 error entries regarding this patch
installation: the first with errorcode 0x80004005 followed by 3 entries with
errorcode 0x800f0826.
This patch is still the only one which fails to install.

What I know about Vista - not much - but -

800f0826
Indicates a previous update has failed to install and thus preventing further
installations of updates. Affects only Windows updates.

Open Windows Update and review your history.

Locate the update/s that have failed to install (you can view further information about
the failed update/s by double-clicking the update )

If the information reveals 800f0826 move onto the next one until you get the update that
displays a different error code to 800f0826.

Once you have located the update that has failed and caused the problem, then that needs
to be fixed before you can install the other updates.

Well that could and most likely be the update you've having problems with so that error
code doesn't tell anything new.

So the next step I would suggest let MS know the problem you're having - (for Vista I
believe you check your event viewer etc for error codes)

How to obtain assistance from MS Support

Customers in the U.S. and Canada can receive technical support from Microsoft Product
Support Services at 1-866-PCSAFETY. There is no-charge for support calls that are
associated with security updates or using Automatic Updates. When you call, clearly state
that your problem is. Note any error codes etc.

I am using a WSUS 3 server, last night there was a revision to this patch and
today it has rolled out with no problem and no prompts for re update.
Those not using WSUS may want to try a windows update and follow Taurian's
process to ensure they ge tthe new update rather than any previously cached one.

The fix is to creat a firewall folder under
c:\windows\system32\logfiles\firewall
that will allow the hotfix to install

I recently had exactly the same problem updating windows vista. for about 6 months my computer simply wouldn't allow me to access the update site and the program in the control panel simply wouldn't download.

As well as this another of the problems i was experiencing was when i would click on a link within a search engine i was being transfered to a second search engine which had nothing to do with the link i had clicked.

I contacted the microsoft support team and they told me to down load a malware remover tool.
after downloading it and running a full scan for the first time it picked up 11 trojans that had been missed by my antivirus software.

You will find that when you download it it will attempt to connect to the web to check for updates, the chances are that if you have the same virus as me it wont allow you to update it either, but if you run a full scan it will remove the malware on your PC.
