Also, in this event, it doesn't effect getting defender updates through windows defender.

Try this it worked for me
Re-register the Windows Update DLL with the commands below:
1. Click on 'Start', choose 'Run'. In the open box, type cmd, and then click
'OK'.
2. Type the following commands. Press 'ENTER' after each command:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
Try Updating Windows.

I also got several errors. 3 to be precise.
-----
The module "wuaueng1.dll" failed to load.
Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or
debug to check for problems with the binary or
dependant .DLL files.
The specified module could not be found.
..
-----
Rinse and repeat the above for "wucltui.dll" and "wuweb.dll"
Seems like update is corrupted to me? Fixes?
I have a similar problem. When I try to run Windows Update I get the error
code 80004002. I have tried the solution suggested above twice, but with the
same result as payne11@up.edu and SRV1N and . Would be great to get some help
on the issue.

I have the same problem. Those three failed to register.
I found this thread: http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/...er-wont-u.aspx,
which seems to indicate a successful fix, but I don't understand how
to replicate it. I downloaded the tool, and from there I'm not sure
what to do. I'm on Vista.
Maybe this will make sense to someone else and you can double back to
help me! :)
Permission Setting in Registry - Senescha
22-Aug-07 02:44:03
I contacted Microsoft Support and got an incident request set up.
I was pleasantly surprised and impressed at the same time how
responsive
they were.
After four emails back and forth with system setup logs, we isolated
the
problem.
It was, as I had suspected, the permission settings that were screwed
up in
my registry.
I think what happened was that the first time the Windows Update
automatically tried to install the new driver, something happened and
the
program stopped or crashed. It corrupted my registry at the time, so
several
important keys were not writeable.
MS suggested running the following along with resetting each of the
keys.
It took about 40 minutes but afterwards the error went away and I was
able to
install the driver without any issues!
Thanks Microsoft!
Another happy customer...

My problem has now resolved itself. I noticed in the Windows update window
that I could check the installed updates (even if I could not start a search
manually) and new ones were added every few days. So I was thinking to do a
registry cleanup. Then another few updates were installed, and that must have
done the job. Several days later Windows Update is still perfect.
It may have been (in order of installation, from August 17-22):
Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.21.2837.1)
Windows Update-programvara (swedish for software) 7.0.6000.374 (on 4
consequetive days)
Windows Update-programvara 7.0.6000.381
Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.21.2840.5)
Windows Vista update (KB929735)

I spent an afternoon with a Microsoft person, and the majority of
today with them checking in on me. They were unable to correct the
situation - and told me it was a conflict issue with Norton & Defender
and it corrupted some files, that even when clean files were copied in
- it wouldn't work. So I had to backup my data, and reinstall the
operating system from my system backup disk..... and build my way
back. That stinks - at least the data burns on a DVD disk rather
quickly - and fit on one. Thank goodness the days of having to backup
onto a stack of floppies are gone.
