Windows XP Update error 80004002

I need help. My old motherboard was broken and I got it replaced. However,
since my computer came back I'm unable to perform any update. They didn't
format it (it came with all my data where it was) but when I go to the
Add/remove programs and select to show updates nothing is displyed. My
computer was up-to-date before that, and now lost all the updates...
The bigger problem is that windows update is returning errors.
1. First I had the 0x8024400a - I know this because I checked the log. I
never did anything to fix it, but today it said a new update was available:
Windows Update 3.1 (i thought the problem was solved but not).
2. Now I download the update, but when try to install it fails with error
code 80004002.

Like if it wasn't enough, my anti-virus is also telling me that I have
vulnerabiliites in my computer (lots of them)...

Can this be solved without format C: (or system restore, remember new
motherboard, not the same model as previously...)

Please help...

Have you tried a system restore and go as far back as possible

Re: Windows XP Update error 80004002

Assuming WinXP:

1. First install the newly released 'standalone' version of Windows Update
Agent 3.0, v7.0.6000.374
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932494

2. Now install this fix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891

NB: Windows Update/Automatic Updates started offering 927891 on 22 May-07.
If "Update for Windows XP (KB927891)" is listed in Add/Remove Programs (make
sure Show Updates box is checked), it's already installed. cf.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec...ry/927891.mspx

3. Reboot.

Re: Windows XP Update error 80004002

Are you sure about that? I've read the first one:
"• The Svchost.exe process may spike the CPU usage to 100 percent during
update detection or update installation. Also, the Svchost.exe process causes
the computer to stop responding for various lengths of time.
• The Svchost.exe process produces an access violation during update
detection or update installation. Additionally, you receive the following
error message:
SVCHOST.exe Application Error
The instruction at 0x0745F2780 referenced memory at 0x000000000 the memory
could not be read.
• The Svchost.exe process leaks memory during update detection or update
installation. "

I don't have those symptoms, but this stills applies for my case?
Thanks for your help.

Yes, I'm sure. If Windows Update was working, it would offer you both of
the upgrades.

Re: Windows XP Update error 80004002

Hello again.
I've tried what you said. For the first update it gave me an error: "can't
install update agent (or something) because this is already installed". I
tried the second one and couldn't install it neither. Error:
"1.547: FileVersion of C:\WINDOWS\system32\msi.dll is Less Than 3.1.0000.0000"
Any more help, please...
