Error Code 80073715

[Jo]

I have a new PC which has Vista 32bit installed and I've only managed to run
windows update once. I keep getting the above error code and it just keeps
asking me to install an update to windows update, I click install and this
error code comes up! I have disabled my antivirus and firewall to see if
this helps but it doesn't... Can anyone help me out please?

That error message implies the package that was downloaded is not the
correct version or is already on the machine or possibly corrupted. If
there was a prerelease package that was installed, you may see this error.
See if the package is available for uninstall via control panel - installed
updates. Attempt to remove it. Add/Remove - be sure to check show all
updates.

Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder (it will be recreated next time you
visit WU again)
You will lose your history but that's not important.

Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service. ( with Vista it may read Windows
Update)
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder:
a. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%, and then click OK.
b. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename.
c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this folder.

Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

Retry Windows Update before reading further.

If you need to reinstall the ActiveX controls (because they may have become
corrupt):-

Follow this article (the article is listed the download for the old client) -
The Windows Update Web site and the Microsoft Update Web site do not scan
for updates when
you repair a failed installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2 or of Windows
XP Service
Pack 1

Note: WU Client 3.0 - Windows Update Agent:

or for the 64 bit version

Well I just tried everything you suggested and it still comes up with the
same error code, I'm now at a loss what to do... any more ideas? :s

Are you getting a KB # with this update alert?

Try downloading it and save it to your desktop. Double click the exe to
install from there. IF that fails, try going into Safe Mode with Networking
and install from there.

There is no KB# at all that's why I'm struggling, I've even searched through
some of the updates so I could try and do it manually.

This is what it says...
'Install new Windows Update software - To check for updates, you must first
install an update for Windows Update'

So I click Install and after about 3 minutes it says 'Windows could not
search for new updates - Error code 80073715'.

Could it have something to do with me installing Norton (which came with the
PC)? I uninstalled Norton after 2 days as my PC didn't like it, and I now
have AVG, everything else works ok apart from Windows Update!!!

Please send Internet Explorer to
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/Support.aspx and click through to
the "Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Page".

If your PC fails the diagnostic tests, then post a request for help at
http://forums.microsoft.com/genuine/...aspx?siteid=25

If your PC passes the diagnostic test, then continue to "Validate Windows".
This will cause the software to be installed that Windows Update is
attempting to install.

Then try Windows Update again, and report back.

You should ALWAYS disable all anti-virus, anti-spyware, download
accelerator, etc, before attempting any Windows Update.

Hi,

Thanks for the info, I followed it all, my PC passed the diagnostics and I
continued to validate windows, I disabled everything that could be affecting
the update but the error still comes up!! :(

Jo,
Are you using Run As Administrator when you launch IE? Right click on IE
desktop icon and select Run As Administrator
1. Look in C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files
2. On the toolbar select View and click on Display
3. Are any of the controls listed as damaged? If so, right click on them
and remove them.
4. You can right click on any control and select properties to view a
description of the control.
5. You can also right click on any control and select update
6. Clear all your Internet Cache Files: Tools>Internet Options>General
Tab>Delete Button>Delete All
7. You'll lose all your saved info when you delete them.
8. Reboot your system

Retry Windows Update

If it fails again, click on Start>Run>Type in regsvr32 /i Urlmon.dll
Click OK
You should receive DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded
Try windows update again

I had the same problem myself and this is what I did and it worked for me.
1.- Google the web site, "system update readiness tool for windows vista".
2.- Once google finds site go for the very first option "description of the system update readiness tool for windows vista"
3.- Scroll down until you see "download the windows vista package now".
4.- When window opens click on download and follow instructions on how to download the program and everything should be cool after that.

Just uninstall the last windows update hotfix and the problem will be resolved.

* Goto Control Panel
* Open Programs and Features
* View installed updates
* Sort updates by date
* Uninstall the latest update hotfix

Thats all, and restart windows update. Problem resolved!
