    more info.

What I am trying to do is re-try this update again to see if I can get it to

But I cannot find any instruction to retry it.

If given a choice - choose to be an IT Professional.
Otherwise look for the direct download.

    1) Reboot and logon as a user with Administrative Privs...
    2) Immediately run the following batch script (You will have to create it by

    - Click Start, Run, type: notepad C:\register.bat and press Enter. Choose

We don't actually have any evidence that deleting or renaming Catroot2 would
be the cure in your case. But I have identified why you were unable to do
it. There is actually an omission in the script that you were given. It is
    necessary also to use:

    net stop cryptsvc

before renaming or deleting Catroot2, and:

    net start cryptsvc

afterwards. Anyway, enough of command-line scripts! Try downloading and
    running Dial-a-Fix from
    http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Use its options to fix Windows Installer, fix Windows Update, and all the
Registration Center options. Then click "GO"

Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution" yet - that's the next heavier
    sledge-hammer.

Dial-a-fix essentially automates all the fixes you were given before.

Clicking on it on the several computers I just tried on three different
    networks started the download for:
    WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe direct from Microsoft.

When you say 'cannot load' - do you mean install?
If so - did you follow the directions given, reboot and run it first thing
with the /wuforce command line switch?

    Hi Shenan Stanley

I would just like to thank you for the info you gave Shawbuttedcm, which apparently fixed a 75 update backlog I had been struggling with. But it looks like Shawbuttedcm is still in trouble.

I followed your instructions to the letter and my backlog has disappeared. I already had agent 30 loaded. I am now trying to find out my current status, but microsoft windows update is confused and tells me I have never downloaded anything but I am set for auto update, then it goes into error and cannot display the page.

The yellow badge in the bottom bar has disappeared. I'll give it 24 hours and see what happens. The only addition to start/run is the KB927891. The rest, all 75 (I have a list) I assume are waiting in the wings somewhere? Because they did download a couple of days ago, but didn't install.

That list of Regsvr addittions appeared to be mostly drivers or similar. How do they relate to the non install problem?

    Hi Shenan

I spoke too soon. It only gave me a very brief respite from " The following updates were not installed" 24 hours later, I am back in the same situation.

    Any suggestions?

    Bobthequill

I just tried Microsofts method 3 to no avail. Even though I changed Catroot2 from read only, I was not allowed access. No temps in there iether.

We are missing essential information about your problems, starting for
instance with: what version of Windows are you running?

If you are running Vista, the old XP-style instructions will not work unless
you acquire elevated Administrator privileges: just having an Administrator
    account login is not enough.

    Hi Robin

Sorry, yes I did sort of slide into this string without a full explanation.

Yes, it's a re-instal of win XP home from an SP2 integrated disk, after I gave up hope of Vista and XP living together amicably on my new core2 duo.
I did the swap back about a month ago.

I had a lot of updates to catch up. I also have Office XP pro.

I Have XP on the main drive plus another XP I can run on a small 70Gb drive. I use bios boot selection to choose which runs.

After that last posting saying that I could not access Catroot2 to take out the temps, I swapped to the small drive and edited the big drive Catroot2 from there. I only found one edbtemp which appeared to have rubbish in it so I deleted that.

But back on the main drive it made no difference. I still have 75 updates downloaded but not installed.

By the way, the catroot2 on the smaller drive allows me to edit with no problem. I have admin priveleges on both and niether are read only.

I have tried most of the microsoft suggestions, such as the deleting of Installation folder contents.

I have been playing around with this for a week or more and have done one re-install of XP but that didn't help.

I find it difficult to work at command line level without making typing mistakes, it's been 30 years since I had to and the software was much simpler then.

I would be gratefull for any advice.

    Bobthequill

    Thanks Robin

I will try that later today and report back.

I did use cryptsvc stop start first time ater Shenans fix but it restarted on its own. But I see what you mean. But surely everything would be stopped when I edited from the alternative drive?

Ho yes, To dispense with Vista, I had to completely reformat the big drive as it had a Vista start up image in a hidden partition, which would re-establish if I merely deleted Vista. They don't give you start up disks out here anymore, nor any documentation.
That was the easy bit, I also had to reload my motherboard firmware from Gigabyte to get acceptable ethernet port, video and sound, as the board was totally devoted to Vista, and wouldn't talk to XP.

    Bobthequill

    Thank you Robin

That Dial-a-Fix is magic. Can't really tell you what it was that fixed it because I ticked every box, except for the Flush Software.

On reboot, all my updates started to Install, plus two more which arrived while it was busy installing. 79 in all, including SP3 for office.

Microsoft should pay Mr DjLizard about half Bill Gates's income and put the thing on their support page.

I was hoping it would help me with a Framework Services problem as well, as that seems to be an installation glitch. But it proved not to be.

I will post that under a separate string I think.

    Thanks again for the advice

Not working: Re: "The following updates were not installed"

Well, I thought it worked (on my daughter's PC) but I just now logged onto it
and the same update came up again, AFTER doing the 'fix.' Any ideas why it
    didn't stick or failed entirely?
