Or... boot the PC using a BootCD, like Hirens Boot CD, using Mini Windows XP. |

| Re: Error Code 80073712
I myself is sitting by a friends laptop and Vista Home. It has SP1 installed and Internet Explorer 7 I have struggled to get some updates in, and so far I have installed KB947821 and KB947821 that is supposed to "prepare" for SP2. I also installed KB937287. But SP2 refuse to install, last error message was 80073712 So I tried this with the XML file. Strangely my file looks like this pending.xml.01c9515a75f8ec60 So its already renamed (not by me). But it was not possible to alter it whitin Windows, so I booted on Hirens BootCD and moved the file to a temp folder to see what happens. NOTHING hapened, no difference, still same error trying to install SP2 |

In this case, in order to avoid the UAC/permissions limitations when working in System folders, the easiest thing to do is to copy the xml file to your desktop, delete the file from winsxs, rename the copy on your desktop and then copy-and-paste it back into the winsxs folder. Keep the copy on your desktop (or in the Recycle Bin) as a backup until the problem is resolved. Please take a look here: http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Pr..._and_Uninstall There you can find the FixIT for your version of Windows. |

| Re: Error Code 80073712
Microsoft Fixit said that errors were fixed Using Fixit for Windows update The other link you gave me did not find any problems. Was not able to copy the renamed file pending.xml back even using Hirens BootCD, "no permissions" And in Vista home there are no Security tab to change permissions.. And still error when trying o update to SP2 using full package for all languages. |

Please confirm: -- That you looked for and used the FixIT for Vista. The link I posted was for Windows 7 64-bit. -- That you right-clicked the file copied to your desktop, chose "COPY", navigated to the WINSXS folder and then pasted into the opened folder. The "Copy to" command will not work. -- What is the System's default language? -- What language packs, if any, have you installed? -- Can you install other Windows updates? Other third-party apps? Run System File Checker: Start> Programs> Accessories> right-click Command Prompt and click Run as Administrator. Type sfc /scannow, press Enter. When finished post the results here. Windows> logs> CBS> cbs.log Have you run a disk check? Start> Programs> Accessories> right-click Command Prompt and click Run as Administrator. Type chkdsk /f, press Enter, type Y, press Enter and exit the Command window and reboot. Please attach a copy of the last CHEKSUR.log generated when you ran the Vista Update Readiness Tool: Windows> logs> CBS> Checksur |
