RE: Stuck on "Checking for the latest updates for your computer..." sc

Same problem:

Worse, I only have a laptop, and it keeps overheating due to the CPU usage
being at 100% for long periods of time. It burned my original fan and I had
to get a new fan off of ebay. Installed new fan but can't get WU to work -
not before heat-protection shuts laptop down.

Tried Hotfix 927891
Made sure BITS and AU and Event Log are running on Auto.
Tried registering dlls.
Tried renaming SoftwareDistribution
Put computer in DMZ on router's firewall.
Made sure *.microsoft.com and *.windowsupdate.com are in trusted sites AND
in privacy tab set to allow (why do we have to do both?)
Even tried installing a program called ThreadMaster in an attempt to prevent
scvhost.exe from running the CPU at 100%.

I am so sick of M$. I've spent at least 10 hours on this problem now thanks
to their greed and incompetence.

My next computer will be a MAC. I don't care if I can't play the latest
video games - I don't have time for games anyway with all these hours of
windows troubleshooting.

Microsoft sucks and they need to learn how to program computers.
Their engineers are all spaghetti-writing retards.

Re: Stuck on "Checking for the latest updates for your computer..." sc

When you use Automatic Updates to scan for updates or to apply updates to applications
that use Windows Installer, you experience issues that involve the Svchost.exe process

Re: Stuck on "Checking for the latest updates for your computer...

TaurArian,

Thank you for trying to help, but the article you link to is simply the
article which tells you to 'Apply hotfix 927891' which I have already done.

Still broken.
Perhaps this is Microsoft's way of encouraging people to upgrade to Vista?
Oops - did we break windows update for XP?
We will have that fixed in 6-8 months. Meanwhile, try Vista!

No, the article 932494 specifically also asks you to install Windows Update
Agent 3.0:

"The WSUS version 3.0 client program has been released to help address the
following issues: . You may experience prolonged high CPU usage when you
scan the computer for updates or when you install updates.
. The computer stops responding (hangs) when you scan the computer for
updates or when you install updates.
To resolve these issues, you must install hotfix 927891 and the new WSUS 3.0
client."

Have you installed the new client 3.0?

I can't even believe how much time this has sucked away.

It is just insane how broken Microsoft software is.

I guess that just goes to show what poor quality you get from an (unlawful)
monopoly..

No, because you are not connecting from Windows via PPPoE when you are using
a router.

Re: Stuck on "Checking for the latest updates for your computer...

For those still facing the problem can use the following site

http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/

Now till yesterday I was having same prom. I tried everytrhing posted here,
but nothing worked.

I used the WindizUpdate service. Its amazing. It let me install all the
updates via Opera itself.

And guess what after installing updates via WindizUpdate , my regular
windows update has started working as well.

This is the best solution I have found so far
