    Windows Defender Update KB915597

Twice I was offered KB 915597 via Automatic Updates. Twice the installation
    was unsuccessful.

Installation via Microsoft Update also failed. No error code was shown but
    the following did show:

The following update was not installed:

Definition Update for Windows Defender – KB 915597 (Definition 1.18.2621.7).

    Can someone help?

Have the same problem. I note an error code attached to the - fail to
download message "0x80244019". Unable to find out what that means

I had the same problem. I tried several times over a thirty minute period
and finally the update went through. Since I did not change anything at my
end, I am thinking it must be a server problem on Microsoft update site.

I followed your advice and on the fifth try I was successful. Like you I
    had not change anything

    ALL,

If you should have further problems, then try downloading the updated definitions files directly from Microsoft:

    http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/ADL.aspx

This address always has the latest definition file...well, as much as MS can be trusted to always have anything.

The address was originally published on the msfn.org forum page

Thanks for the link. I tried this, downloading and running the file,
which completed without emitting any error messages.

But then I asked Windows Update to check for available updates, and it
still insisted this was an outstanding update. It cites the exact
version number that the web page said it was giving me.

So I looked at the msfn.org page shown below, where someone said you had
to stop the service, do the update, and restart.

When I went into Services, I found that Windows Defender was listed as
start type "Automatic," but was not started. So I tried to start it, and
got "Error 0x80070003: The system cannot find the path specified."

Anybody have a clue what is going on here?

System: Vista Business, on a Lenovo laptop. I am also running Symantec's
Norton security thingy, which I suspect may be an issue.

    1. After making certain you have a copy of your Product Key, uninstall all
Norton software (including LiveUpdate) via Add/Remove Programs.

    2. Enable the Windows Firewall.

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,
browsing; reading email; chatting) except #XX below until your anti-virus
application has been installed and fully updated!

    3. Run this removal tool:
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039

    4. Reboot and /immediately/ install Avira AntiVir* (free), or the 30-day
    free trial version of, e.g., NOD32**, KAV7***

    5. Manually update your new anti-virus application then run a full system
    scan.

    Do your problems persist now?

[Don't forget to subscribe to your new AV app or uninstall it then reinstall
the Norton application before the free-trial period expires! Should you
decide to reinstall the Norton application, I recommend not installing any
    Norton Add-ons for a while.]

    Re: Windows Defender Update KB915597

I have been experiencing this problem with the Windows Defender definition updates but in my case the update installs successfully. Then about 10 minutes later the same update appears a second time and again it apparently completes successfully.

This has been happening for several months now on every definition update and I am unable to find any reason for this behaviour. I do not allow the updates to automatically install as I like to know what is being installed on my machine and possibly this problem might not be noticed on a machine where the updates are automatically installed.

Has anybody an explanation as to why this is happening to just these updates?

Microsoft has established separate newsgroups for Windows Defender support
and comments. If problems persist, I'd recommend posting about it in a new
thread in the appropriate Defender newsgroup for best assistance.

TIP: Access these newsgroups using your default newsreader, not your
browser. See instructions on above page.

NB: The Defender newsgroups will not be accessible via the techarena forums
web-interface you're using to post here.

Thank you for your reply PA Bear.

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition SP3 and this behaviour also arose with SP2 previously. The manual update from the URL you gave did not cause any problem so I gather it must be something connected with the Windows auto-update. Also updating from the Windows Defender program completes with no problem.

It doesn't cause any real problem because the updates always install, but each time it happens twice with two notifications that there is an update, and I am just curious! All other Windows updates install successfully with just the one notification.

    Re: Windows Defender Update KB915597

I have win7 and had this update from win update site,,There were 6 different versions downloaded at once. After it downloaded and restarted all seemed ok until I logged off and the pc(alienware/aurora) would not shut down ..even after 5 hrs. I read somewhere a program still running could be the problem. I also have Norton AV and did not disable my AV as well as windows firewall and nothing else in this area. When I forced to shut down the pc still stayed lit(alien head that accesses the cd/dvd player). I had to uninstall the NAV and do a system restore ansd pc nows runs like new so I do not use the windows defender anymore..too many problems.

Can anyone tell me why they are having endless different versions of this update? It appears that the first posts about this were from 2007, and in the past month, I just noticed, there have been 11 of them, including one that said it was successful, then when I rebooted, it had to be installed again.

What does this mysterious family of updates do, anyway?

Microsoft Windows Defender regularly downloads updates to the definition files that are used to identify spyware and other potentially unwanted software. Windows Defender may also periodically download detection engine updates. Microsoft delivers these updates by using Microsoft Windows Update, Automatic Updates, and Windows Server Update Service (WSUS).
