KB927891 causes CD/DVD access to be prohibited

I installed KB927891 today and shut down my Windows XP Pro system. Upon
restarting the system, I discovered the following error:

"Administrator has prohibited access to CD/DVD ROM drives."

A similar error pops up if I attempt to use a USB drive.

This is an unacceptable situation, as I have no access to any external
drives or resources. I have tried to uninstall this particular Windows
    Update, but the error persists.

Any suggestions on how to return my system to a usable state?

A search of the "Administrator has prohibited access to CD/DVD ROM drives."
error message revealed two separate threads where uninstallation of the
"Desktop Utilities" program (one had Acer Desktop Utilities and the other had
Intel Desktop Utilities) resolved the problem.

RE: KB927891 causes CD/DVD access to be prohibited

I, too, came across the same threads referring to Desktop Utilities, but I
decided to ignore the "solutions" they suggested because my installation of
Intel Desktop Utilities (IDU) has been the same for a year+. But, in good
conscience, I couldn't respond without at least giving it a try.

As luck would have it, uninstalling the IDU package returned my system to a
usable state -- all CD, DVD, and removeable media drives were accessible
again. However, all of the drive icons in "My Computer" switched from
    regular icons to "unknown" icons.

Since I was already in experimental mode, I reinstalled IDU and everything
is once again back to normal.

I can't explain it. And it really doesn't make any sense. But Patch
KB927891 clearly conflicts with various brands of desktop utilities (Intel
for sure) and the "fix" is to uninstall and reinstall.

For those who run into this problem in the future: I found that System
Restore does *not* work to repair this problem. My advice is to follow the
uninstall/reboot/reinstall sequence and see what happens.

And thank YOU for the additional info (change in drive icons). So, I am
assuming that the reinstall of Desktop Utilities did not cause a recurrence
    of the prohibited access problem.

My mother has the same issue. I found this thread from Google and was so grateful!! She did not, however, have the Windows update mentioned. I uninstalled 2 others that were installed the day the problem happened, but as you stated, this did not resolve the issue.

She does have an Acer computer. How do I uninstall Acer Disktop Utilities? I did not see this anywhere. Any help appreciated, Mom is alone, is 74, and the highpoints of her days are listening to her old cd's on the computer and playing pogo cards with everyone.

Just a word to say thanks.
I had the exact symptoms as Dr. PDX and followed your sugestion and got the exact results as Dr.PDX and followed what he did and am now back in good shape. I also had Intel DTU installed and working fine for over 2 years and was at my wits end when I found your post.
I did have difficulity removing the utility and had to download a Freeware
removal utility to remove it, but it was downhill after that.

Could you tell me what Freeware removal utility you used to remove it?
