Automatic Updates Generating Error and Closing

Hello people!
I really need some help here, i have encountered a perculiar problem with my
Automatic Updates service.
I am running Windows XP SP2 on a AMD 2ghz Sempron processor and out of
knowehere today a constant error message has started that will not go away.
It says "Automatic Updates has generated a problem and needs to close" and
when i either click Send Error report or Don't Send and the box dissapears it
comes straight back and just keeps doing that all time no matter ho wmany
times i click don't send or send it just keeps coming back!! Help me please!

Here is the technical infomation about what the error report contains:-

C:\DOCUME~1\KEVINT~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERf9df.dir00\wuauclt.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\KEVINT~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERf9df.dir00\appcompat.txt

Suggest you download the latest version of the Windows Update Agent:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x86.exe

Save it, do NOT run it, close the browser and any other open programs
Now run "WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe"
If you get a message that the Update Agent is already installed, then go
to Start > Run > click the Browse button
Navigate to where WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe is located and click on it
Click the Open button
At the Open: line, click once on "WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe"
It should be highlighted in blue
Click just *after* the last quotation mark - "
Push the Space Bar on the keyboard and type in

/wuforce
The command should now look like this

"C:\<wherethefileislocated>\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" /wuforce

[Notice the space after the last quotation mark]
Click OK or press Enter
Restart the system
Did that resolve the issue ?

I'm having the same problem, and followed these instructions. When I ran the
program from the icon where I saved teh file to my desktop and when I forced
it per the instructions, I get the same error:

Install failed with following error number:
0x80070420

Help!?

I am having a related problem with which you hopefully can help.

I can't delete the "WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe"!!!!!!

I had a similar problem about sudden error messages with Windows update,
after I repaired an existing WXP Pro using the repair option (NOT the option
using the console, but the repair option after in Setup, after pressing F8 to
accept the license) and original CD.

However, my error messages were from the Update web site, telling me I had
to enable the Userdata persistence option in IE7.

I checked, and it was already enabled.

I kept getting that same error message from the Update web site.

I still could not install any of the updates.

After searching the internet, I came across one lone post that solved my
Update error message problem.

By uninstalling one particular MS update, the userdata persistence error
message went away, and now all the updates are installing just fine.

However, prior to finding that one post, I had found the KB article about
"WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe", and I downloaded it.

I saved it to My Documents.

Now I can't delete that "WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" file!!!!

I keep getting an "Access Denied" error message.

I am the Administrator for my WXP Pro copy on this computer.

Why can't I delete this file????

Please help!

*Right* click WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe and choose Properties.
Click the Security tab
Under Group or user names, you should see your UserName
[ IF YourUserName is not listed click the Add button
Click the Advanced button
For 'Select this object type:' it should show
' Users, Groups, or Built-in security principals '
Then click the Find Now button
Locate YourUserName, click on it, and then click OK ]
Click on it to highlight it
For Permissions for YourUserName, make sure that these boxes are checked:
Full Control
Modify
Read&Execute
Write
Then click Apply, OK to close the Properties window
Delete WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe now

Hello MowGreen:

Sorry, I must have a mutant file here!

There are only 7 tabs in 2 rows.

The bottom row has these 4 tabs (from left to right): "General"; "Program";
Font"; and, "Memory".

The top row has these 3 tabs (from left to right): "Screen"; "Misc"; and,
"Compatibility".

No "Security" tab anywhere.

Thoughts?

Just to be sure here, you mentioned XP Pro, correct ?

I've downloaded WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe from the link in the
earlier post
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x86.exe
and that's not what I'm seeing.

Which KB article did you download it from ?
In the meantime, see if you can boot to Safe Mode and delete it from
within there:

Hello again MowGreen:

I tried Safe Mode, but it would not delete.

I got an error message box saying that access was denied because the disk
was full (my C:/ partition currently has about 30 Gb of free space) or the
file was in use.

I had originally downloaded it from KB943144, because after I had repaired
my WXP Professional installation, I could not install any updates.

I kept getting the error message to enable Userpersistence data in my IE7
browser, but it was already enabled.

I followed both steps in KB943144, but that did not fix the problem.

Then I found one lone post in one forum that descibed another solution.

He had traced the problem to KB902400.

He said if that had been on your computer, and you uninstalled it, then the
Userpersistence data problem would vanish.

Sure enough, KB 902400 was already on my computer.

I uninstalled it, and immediately the Updates page worked fine.

Now I suppress KB902400 akll the time, so it will not be installed
automatically.

I also have to suppress KB928365, since that one always fails to install
anyway.

So I hope I have addressed you questions.

MowGreen....we tired the solution provided but we are still having an issue.
Our issue however is a bit different from what I'm seeing here.

We think that the wuauclt.exe is actually a virus. We keep getting the
wuauclt.exe has encountered an error...... and when we click don't send the
report, we just get a blank screen, no icons, nothing. I can do the
Ctl-Alt-Del and bring up task manager and start programs from there, but how
do I get my screen back and all the desktop icons, start button etc.
