Re: windows defender defination updates error found : code 0x80004002

Please see this page http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm then post back to this
thread with the information we'd need to be able to assist you properly.

See this KB article which has many suggestions & tips:

How to troubleshoot definition update issues for Windows Defender:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918355

Microsoft has established separate newsgroups for Windows Defender support
and comments. This is not one of them. See
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...s/default.mspx

Easy Fix

I found 2 sites with fixes, combined them into a batch file and ran it, restarted, and did all updates without a hitch:

assuming your os is win xp adn located on your c: drive,

open notepad:

start- all programs - accessories - notepad

Cut and paste this into notepad:

regsvr32.exe iuengine.dll
regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll
regsvr32.exe wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32.exe wuauserv.dll
regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll
regsvr32.exe wups.dll
regsvr32.exe wuweb.dll
regsvr32.exe wups2.dll
regsvr32.exe cdm.dll
regsvr32.exe msxml2r.dll
regsvr32.exe msxml3r.dll
regsvr32.exe msxml.dll
regsvr32.exe msxml3.dll
regsvr32.exe msxmlr.dll
regsvr32.exe msxml2.dll
regsvr32.exe qmgr.dll
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

Now click on File
Click on Save As
(dialogue box appears)
At the bottom do the drop down in Save as Type as ALL FILES

In File Name box name it Winupdatefix.bat
Save it to your desktop (for ease of finding it)

it will appear as a ms-dos batch file.
double click
press enter after each confirmation. if it says it is missing a file or cannot re-register don't worry. Note: initpki.dll will seem to hang, it just takes less than a minute comapred to the others (that are almost instant).

Restart computer (optional)

try to update again, it will work.

I've done this 6 times now on different machines that failed. I keep the batch file on a usb jump drive for ease of access.

Enjoy!

Legend!

Thanks for your post, I had spent half a day looking for an answer to this problem.

None of the updates would work including defender. Updates would download but failed to install with no error message - just failed. This worked a treat.

Thanks again!

You are amazing Boraxus. I would have been here all night if not for your great fix.

This worked great.. Fixed my Windows Defender Update problem

Additionally I was having probelms installing the Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 (KB928365).

After running this batch file I was able to install this .NET update.

Windows update fix worked great, I've been in the Microsoft troubleshooter for hours with no success.

Thank you very much Boraxus. It was a lifesaver. It works with no further
problem.

Works like a charm... thanks. Automatic updates and Defender updates are now
working.

Not sure how or why but the above REGSVR32 batch file fixed my issue
completely. Thanks again Boraxus!

It works, THANKS Boraxus!!!

You are so great!!! Your batch file does the job extremely nicely! Thanks so much :D

If not for your batch file, I will have to go through the absolutely NON-user-friendly articlessss found in microsoft support library, and very possibly, end up not knowing what to do to solve the problem even after reading them :P

God bless you!

Re: windows defender defination updates error found : code 0x80004

OR, just download, ***save***, and then run the Fixit on this page:

How do I reset Windows Update components?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

The system needs to be connected to the internet when run as it will
download the updating software components required to update a Windows OS.
Running it in it's Aggressive mode will do all the steps listed in the MSKB.
The Fixit applies to *both* x86 (32bit) and x64 system architecture.
