ATI 4379 Driver Update won't install, crashes system

Auto Update downloaded a driver update. Failed to install. Error message
80070103 that driver not compatiable with system. On reboot, system does not
start and have to use the restore point. How can I eliminate this update from
system and prevent from downloading again?

running Vista Home Premium on Acer 5100 AMD turion 2x 64 with 1 gb mem.

Device manager does show the ATI 4379 Serial ATA Controller installed on
    machine. Is a Bus adapter.

    Hi there,

If really needed (when your hardware is not working well) take the driver
    from ATI.

When updating you should be able to choose a custom update demark the ATI
update and choose do not show this update again.

When using win update by web you shlould be able to hide the update.

    Best regards,

Here is latest I have found out. Not good news.

I contacted Microsoft and they do not know the answer. Their workaround is
the same as others have mention in this thread. In Windows Auto Update, check
the box to "Ask before installing" and then when this download is ready,
click on install later and just never install it. Note you will get this
message everytime you reboot your system but at least Vista will boot up this
way without resorting to using the last good restore.

    good luck.

    Hi There,

Go to windows update site and disable the specific OPTIONAL driver update
    (hide it)

Taking driver updates from windows update is really not a good idea
    unlessyou like problems!!!

If your device is working fine it is recommanded not to update the driver,if
really needed, if the device is not functioning well that is, you should
take a driver from the manufacturers website.

Try rolling back on the driver, boot last known good configuration or use
system restore to to a date before the problem occured to try and work
around the occured problem. You can also try if you know which update caused
    the problem to uninstall it.

Take the original driver from your mainboard driver cd if needed.

    Best regards,
    Michel Denie
