    Hi cherbrO,

Have a look at this MSKB article:

You receive an "Initialization error 0x800A1391" error message and the
Windows Update Web site does not appear
    http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=836961
In addition to the four URLs listed in step#6, add these two URLs:
    http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
    https://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com

If you still receive that error message when attempting to connect to the
Windows Update site, then you may have malware (specifically, a
CoolWebSearch variant) present on your computer. D/load the standalone
    version of CWShredder from here:
    http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract..._download.html
Once it has been d/loaded, restart your computer in Safe Mode and run
    CWShredder.
Once CWShredder has run, and any nasties removed, restart your computer in
Normal mode and see if you can now access the Windows Update site.

    Regards,

I tried adding the url's, I downloaded and ran CWShredder and Trend Micro
Anti-Spyware and I still receive the 0x900A1391 error. I also tryed typing
the 0x08001391 error in the search box in the Search Microsoft.com for: box
and it finds nothing. Do you Patti or anyone else whom reads this have any
other ideas of what the issue may be?

Were you successful adding the URLs?

In this paragraph you mention error 0x900A1391, then searching for
error 0x08001391. In the post you were replying to the error number
    referenced is 0x800A1391.
    See the differences?
    0x900A1391
    0x08001391
    0x800A1391
I'd go back and retry the correct error number ( 0x800A1391 ) in the
    search box.

Re: Windows xp update error number: 0x800A1391

Correct you are DAK, I made an error myself when typing the error code that I
receive when attempting to update windows. I will copy and paste exactly as
the error code I receive is:

    [Error number: 0x800A1391]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
    trying to view.

I had recently downloaded and installed the following windows update files:
    KB894391, KB893803 and KB886903. I am using Windows XP Home OS, SP2,
Nortens Internet Security 2004, Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta and cable ISP.
    I have done the following:
    1) Updated my Norton's Internet Security and scanned my entire computer for
    any virus
    2) Updated my Beta Microsoft Anti-Spyware and scanned my entire computer
    for any spyware.
    3) Ran my Dell Support Version 5.0.0.766, powered by Gteko
NIS found no virus on my computer (I've never had one that I am aware of, PC
is only 9 months old). Microsoft Anti-Spyware found no spyware on my PC (I
ran full scans with both NIS and Microsoft Anti-Spyware). And the Dell
Support software found no update, maintenance or security issues with my PC.
    And I have:
    1) Downloaded and ran CWShredder in Windows Safe Mode
    2) Entered seven different Microsoft url's (including the
    http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu....aspx?ln=en-us url that
is displayed when I attempt to update windows) to IE trusted sites in the
    Internet Options.
The CWShredder found no COOLWEBSEARCH Trojan on my PC. Entering the url's
in the trusted sites list made no difference to me being able to update
windows. I still receive the same error code.
    And lastly I have:
    1) I checked the Windows Time and Date, they are both accurate.
    2) I checked that there is only one language assigned in the IE options.
There was only English (United States) [en-us].

If you DAK, or anyone who might know how to remedy this situation of not
being able to update Windows using the Microsoft Windows Update Server and
receiving the Error 0x800A1391, PLEASE HELP by posting what needs to be done.

    Thank you very much,
    =Air=

Sorry, but I don't know anything beyond what you've already tried.
The 0x800A1391 error is caused by not being able to download and run
the ActiveX component that is a part of the Windows Update site
(usually due to improperly configured security settings).
The usual solution is to add the Windows Update web sites to the list
of trusted sites in Internet Explorer, which you have already done.
If the sites were added successfully the only thing I can think of is
to double check that the "Require Server Verification (https:) For All
Sites In This Zone" checkbox is clear (located where you added the web
    sites to the Trusted Zone).

Thanks DAK... Yes, I had that box clear. I'm wondering if perhaps I somehow
    inadvertenly changed security settings.
Appreciate your reply, perhaps someone might have another idea.

    Take Care...

RE: Windows xp update error number: 0x800A1391

I did the simplest and safest thing - IN NIS, navigate to custom settings in
the personal firewall section of the NIS box and change the active x control
to medium - it promprts you for active x downloads and the update site works
again - without disabling all your other NIS internet protection.

RE: Windows xp update error number: 0x800A1391

If you are using ZoneAlarm you need to go into the privacy tab and add
update.microsoft.com under the site list tab and enable mobile codes for only
this one. This will allow Active X to be run, which is required for Windows
Update to run successfully. I think this problem is being caused by a new
    Windows update version.
