Windows automatic updates fail

I have seven updates that won't load. Talk about a pain every second time I
shut down!
The dialog reports this as follows,

Automatic Updates
Updates were unable to be successfully installed
The following updates were not installed:
Security Update for Office 2003 (KB920813)
Update for Excel 2003 (KB929058)
Security Update for Word 2003 (KB929057)
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB931764)
Update for Office 2003 (KB925251)
Update for PowerPoint 2003 (KB929060)
Security Update for Office 2003 (KB929064)

For a month or so now this has been going on interspersed with other system
problems caused by windows downloads relating to,
Generic Host Process for Win32 Services Error, user32.dll memory reassign
due to clash with HHCTRL.OCX.
I have resolved these with hotfixes but not the update failures!

RE: Windows automatic updates fail

I've had the same problems with no resolution. Did you ever get the updates
to install and if so what did you do?

RE: Windows automatic updates fail

I individually found and downloaded each of the updates then tried to install
them.
Each one took a long time to execute and resulted in a notice "Update cannot
be applied."
I also noted that each of the updates is for a component of MS Office.
There is a series of "methods" for "How to troubleshoot failures updating
your Office installation from the Office Update Web site" at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/304498
I'm up to method 5 and still havn't fixed the issue.

5 weeks without updates on Vista. What a gloriousproduct!

Trustedinstaller.exe fails and there is no way to manually installer the updates.

The most frustrating thing is how there's no place to send the error message to. While XP had that "Send Error" dialog whenever any app crashed, apparently MS never thought any of their software would crash.

Oh well. More frustrations with Microsoft Windows. Whatever did I expect? I've been going through this crap since Windows 3.0.

I really wish Linux was viable for the average user.

RE: 5 weeks without updates on Vista. What a glorious product!

I finally got to the end of the list in the earlier tech-assist.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/304498
The ONLY suggestion that worked was to de-install my ENTIRE MS Office 2003
installation and then re-install it. Every update since has gone in with no
problems!

The downside of this was obviously the large amount of time it takes to do
this.

The upside was that the de-install didn't lose any of my personal settings
files such as the mail post box (*.pst), favourites folder or e-mail setups.
I was AMAZED!

After the HUGE hassle of identifying a fix and executing it I must say it
came as a pleasant surprise that these items were not lost and didn't require
re-installing.
