| help! updates fail to install
I have the following problem. Any updates that i try to install (either via automatic updates or from manual downloads) fail to install. The error given is as follows: installation status: Failed Error Code: 80073712 This error occurs with any number of updates including the following KB932246 KB929399 the last successful update was KB929735 on march 4th I also have the following sympton: when I try to access the 'Turn Windows features on or off' from the 'Programs and Features' panel, the window pops up but it never gets populated. I should note that these two symptoms (inability to install updates as well as inaccesibility to the 'turn features on/off' panel) is described in the following document: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/KB931712 The suggested solution is to delete a registry value via the following command: reg delete HKLM\COMPONENTS /v StoreDirty This solution, however, does not work because there is no such registry value. Various other suggested solutions (such as to delete the SoftwareDistribution directory) have been equally useless. Please help! |

Hi, I've just started getting the error number too & I've tried that cmd: ....StoreDirty & get "access denied"!. Wow! My very own pc & I am denied??? I've read most of the answers on this problem, but no-one seems to have the right answer. I have Vista 32bit & no problems until this. If anyone has the answer, everyone will be grateful! You need to run CMD.exe under admin to not be denied, but don't bother. The KB article you read will not work. Short of a reload, I haven't found a solution. It's weird there's not been any fix yet. It's a very serious bug. "beegeebopper" wrote: > Hi, I've just started getting the error number too & I've tried that cmd: > ...StoreDirty & get "access denied"!. Wow! Thanks for your reply. I've been trying to rename the software folder as other people have advised, and yes, I get denied that too. I've checked my folders & they all say I've got access to them, but I cannot get it to change that! Never mind the updates! I'm starting to feel angry with Vista... | vista update error code 80073712
ya Hi my name is Theo and ive been getting this error for a while now, I suspect there are more updates but vista update is just too skrewed to find them now, I got stuck on update KB933566 for internet explorer 7 and so ya im skrewed, this is a serious problem and ive sent a complaint to microsoft twice, no reply of coarse. ok just to save time heres what ive tried and it hasnt worked. 1. the CMD thing yes ive tried that, VERY stupidly enough, i have followed microsofts orders and the command but guess what, cmd doesnt recognise the command.....microsoft? brain? anywhere? i might try fiddling with the code, it goves u sum advice as to what a code should look like so ill get back to you on that. 2. I have tried downloading and installing the update manually, hopefully unjamming it from update......but no.....to install it ONLY utilises vista update.....ironic huh? another sugestion to this is to try find something that can manually install something and use that then run an update search and see if the update has been removed and if windows update is unjammed, but all of that requires a different installer, and hell if i know where those can be found but hey for those that know, please feed back. so there you have it, vaid sugestions but i think just THINK if you get that update ur on out of the way (we are nearly all on different updates) then maybe vista update will be unjammed and we can all be free, just a suggestion to microsoft aswell but i wouldhave thought the smarter than that, well, need help, anytime would be nice. :D |

| RE: help! updates fail to install
Hello, I am also joining your group of "what the heck do we do next", I had a list of 15 updates that wouldnt install (kept failing) so I re installed vista (bit 32) on top of its self (I didnt remove it before I ran install again) as it does not have a repair like xp it went to installation and that then led to crutial updats and that allowed me to install all of the 15 updates I was stuck on but now I am stuck on this error: 80072EFD nothing helps me and you all talk the talk that I cant understand. I need simplified instructions if anyone can help "danielvista" wrote: > I have the following problem. OK! As I am sure you have gathered I am no expert (shock, horror), well i was untill vista shattered all my hopes of that........LOL. anyway what I did (unsure if it was wise or not), was put the disk in and clicked install (even though it is already installed) then I followed usual prompts key etc. It then came to a part that asked if I wanted to install critical updates I chose to do this. NO IT DID NOT DELET ANY existing files, docs etc. It did however install all the updates I was having trouble getting. but, and thats a big but, now I am stuck on Windows Update error 80072efd. which is really doing my head in. I dont want to have to re in stall every bloody time I come across an update cause surely that cant be good........ I have done what you said and as the help screen had pointed that out but what a loud of hog wash as it is already in there. SO I cant say what I did was correct but it was a temp' fix "Zinthoid" wrote: > > thats the whole point here, NOW one question (or 2 actually :s) ok how > do i reinstall vista home basik 32 bit and does it delete all files or > any if actually from your computer? and then now heres the answer I > THINK to your problem and ill walk u thru it if u say it makes no sence > (cos i am idiot at running systems like vista, buuuut know how 2 use it > LOL) ok so go here > http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...a29271033.mspx > see if that helps (just copy and past onto ur browser LOL :D) and please > help me 2 by telling me what u just did EXACTLY step by step 2 get rid > of this error that i have that u just resolved (i.e. answer the first 2 > questions above LOL:D ) TNX!!!! > > > -- > Zinthoid > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > Zinthoid's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/27081.htm > View this thread: help! updates fail to install > > http://forums.techarena.in > > |

Ohh and also, do you have a personalized desktop or have you left it standard vista.....I am having a brain wave (Look out it could get scary).....well just a thought but I have a collage of photo's as my desktop wallpaper, and I have the background colour pink, I have also used the transperancy thingy mabob(technical term, u no). Perhaps they are interferring........????????????? Huge guess, "Zinthoid" wrote: > > thats the whole point here, NOW one question (or 2 actually :s) ok how > do i reinstall vista home basik 32 bit and does it delete all files or > any if actually from your computer? and then now heres the answer I > THINK to your problem and ill walk u thru it if u say it makes no sence > (cos i am idiot at running systems like vista, buuuut know how 2 use it > LOL) ok so go here > http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...a29271033.mspx > see if that helps (just copy and past onto ur browser LOL :D) and please > help me 2 by telling me what u just did EXACTLY step by step 2 get rid > of this error that i have that u just resolved (i.e. answer the first 2 > questions above LOL:D ) TNX!!!! > > > -- > Zinthoid > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > Zinthoid's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/27081.htm > View this thread: help! updates fail to install > > http://forums.techarena.in > > |
