Stuck in reboot loop after windows update

    Hi,

I ran the windows update this morning and it updated 5 items (didn't really
pay that much attention to what they were :( )

Now after the system restart it is getting to just before the login prompt,
states it is configuring updates then shutsdown again. it has been in this
    loop for the last hour.

I have tried safe mode, same thing. last known good configuration, no joy
    either.

    Plesae help me!

Maybe you could boot with the Windows CD and then go back to an earlier
    system restoration point.

I have two machines that hang at "windows is shutting down" screen since the
last update. I have two more machines but I haven't tried them yet.

What does it do when you try to enter Safe Mode?

You never mentioned what version of Windows you are using.

vista business and safe mode does the same

Have you tried the "Startup Repair" tool yet? If not, I would try that
before reverting to an eariler restore point.

Microsoft has a walk-thru on how to use the Startup Repair Tool at the link
    below.

    http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...351033.mspx#EU

You'll need to boot from the Windows Vista disc to use the tool.

RE: Stuck in reboot loop after windows update

If Startup Repair fails to fix the problem, then boot from the Vista disc
again and use the "Syttem Restore" option to revert to a point before you
installed the updates that caused the problem.

If you are able to boot successfully, I would do the following to
    troubleshoot the problem.
    1. Using System Restore, create another restore point.
    2. Run Windows update.
    3. Instead of applying all the updates, do one at a time and reboot.
    4. Keep doing this until you find the one that causes the system to fail.
Make a note of it so you can avoid this update in the future.
    5. If it fails to boot again, boot from the Vista disc and use System
Restore to get everything working again.

RE: Stuck in reboot loop after windows update

Startup repair did not find any issues so i did a system restore that was
before the windows update so it has all come back.

first time i have had a problem with updates, will be more cautious from now
    on.

    thanks again for the replies.

Re: Stuck in reboot loop after windows update

I have the same problem but on my windows XP SP2. Since KB929338 is
installed, I cannot boot up my windows (in any mode). When it's trying
to load ntkern???? (something, not enought time to read), computer
    restart.
I don't know how to do to remove this buggy update. (is it possible to
do manually, cut/paste file on filesystem ?)

    Thanks for your help.

    Here's how to fix it...

Do a reboot from a hard shutdown. Press f8 key until you get to the screen
asking about safe mode. Select repair. Then you should find a System Restore
option. Select it. Go through until it gives you a choice of dates then
select a date before the update. It worked like a charm and didn't lose any
data. Turn off your automatic install of updates option.

Sorry, this is a fix for those people stuck in the Vista updates loop.

Posting a complete copy of the Stop error report would help.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Keep pressing the F8
key during Start-Up and select option - Disable automatic restart on
system failure. Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure.
