The SQL Server 2005 Database Service can not be started. Try starting the
service manually from Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and then Services.
It should be called "SQL Server (MSSMLBIZ)". If there is an error, what is
    the error?

    Thanks,
    Peter Saddow

RE: Error installing (KB 921896) - Code 2B22

I get the following error: Windows could not start the SQL Server (MSSMLBIZ)
on Local Computer. For more information review the System Event Log. If
this is a non-Microsoft service contact the vendor, and refer to
    service-specific error code 17113.

Then I 'finally' found the Event Log and the message is: Error 2(The system
cannot find the file specified.) occurred while opening file 'c:\Program
    Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\DATA\master.mdf' to obtain
configuration information at startup. An invalid startup option might have
caused the error. Verify your startup options, and correct or remove them if
    necessary.

I tried to look at my startup options, in Defender, but Vista is a bit
unfamiliar right now so I don't know where else to look. I didn't see
anything that looked like SQL in Defender startup options.

    Thanks again for the help!

RE: Error installing (KB 921896) - Code 2B22

    Hi Folks

I have a very similar problem to UR21derful (good name that) and have tried
the Manual startup for "Office Source Engine" and for "SQL Server
(MSSMLBIZ)". The former starts OK and the later starts and then stops, with
the warning that some services stop automatically if they are not in use by
other services or programs. I left them both on automatic but still KB921896
    fails to install.

I have Office 2003 and 2007 trial on board with VISTA Home Premium.

Any help would be gratefully received and diligently applied.

RE: Error installing (KB 921896) - Code 2B22

Download the update and install it manually. You WILL need the original
    install CD.

    2b22

I have had the same problem.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 2

    won't install. Error Code 2B22.

I went through control panel to turn on the SQL Server,
my computer calls it SQL Server (VAIO_VEDB), and the program wouldn't start.

Error Code 17113. My laptop didn't come with any kind of disc.

Hey guys, i just wanted to see if any of you solved this issue (as i am having the same exact problem). Mine is MSSQL$VAIO_VEDB as well. After doing a little digging, it turns out that the file master.mdb is having issues starting. Here's info from the event viewer:

Error 3(The system cannot find the path specified.) occurred while opening file 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\DATA\master.mdf' to obtain configuration information at startup. An invalid startup option might have caused the error. Verify your startup options, and correct or remove them if necessary.

    An exerpt from the details:
    - <EventData>
<Data>3(The system cannot find the path specified.)</Data>
    <Data>C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\DATA\master.mdf</Data>

I have verified that this is the correct path and have verified that all the permissions on master.mdf are checked to "allow."

To help the above guys, the "startup options" i believe will be in your regedit. This issue comes up under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQLServer\Parameters

    Anybody with additional info?
    Thanks,
    Travis

RE: Error installing (KB 921896) - Code 2B22

I went to the section described by Peter below. I couldn't get it to start
manually at first either. Then I right clicked on"SQL Server (MSSMLBIZ)" and
chose properties. Next I chose the "Log On" tab. I noticed that there is a
user name and password already entered into a field. So out of curiosity I
checked "Local System Account" instead. I then tried the windows Update
again. IT FINALLY WORKED! I hope this saves someone else hours of headaches.

I tried that and am getting error code 17113, its on manual start up.
But I also have SQL Server (SQLexpress) that is started and on automatic
start up. If I have the 2nd one do I need the 1st one with the error?

Thanks to Jerry and cr4zy1, I get rid of the incubus of 2b22 but I
cannot find a report of a successful update of KB921896 in the history
