Computer got stuck installing automatic updates on shut down

I bought a new computer (a Lenovo laptop) with Windows Vista. Last night,
when I click "shut down" it began installing automatic Windows updates. It
has been trying to install update 4 out of 9 for about three hours now. I
need to interrupt this process and start over. Any idea how I can do it?

    Hi Bynow,

Use msconfig. Click Services Hide all Microsoft Services and click
Disable All. Click Startup and click Disable All. Click Apply then click
Close and reboot. On reboot, go back to msconfig and dot Normal Startup.
Click Apply and close. Do not restart the computer. Go to Windows Update
within Vista and install all. Once installed, reboot.

I don't understand how you can access msconfig when the pc is hung (mine is doing the same) - can you elaborate?

How did the original poster get on in the end?

Can you get into Safe Mode? If so, do it there.

    RE: me too

I have the same issue. Purchased a new Dell laptop yesterday and worked
fine. Today when I logged off, the computer has been hung up on installing
update 17 of 21. Won't allow me to access any screens. I welcome any
    feedback or suggestions.
