Security Update for Windows XP (KB927779) wants to repeatedly inst

I keep installing it and it keeps coming up that I have an update ready to
install. Can anyone help with this or tell what I can do to stop it?

thanks,

RE: Security Update for Windows XP (KB927779) wants to repeatedly inst

I've got the same problem. I've tried uninstalling, reboot, reinstall,
reboot - that didn't help. I've tried downloading the manual installer, and
that didn't help. I verified file versions listed in the security bulletin,
and they're correct, and the registry entries listed in the security bulletin
exist. It still downloads and notifies me its ready to install every time I
start up the computer.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Scott

The same problem here. I thought it was related to my uninstall of office
2007 TR + manual removal of files and folders left after installation
(following an article on microsoft.com on how to COMPLETELY remove all traces
of the installation). Have you done the same thing?

Wound up uninstalling it, did a system restore, did an auto update and
unchecked this particular one. Solved the problem, but is my system now more
vulnerable?

God bless Bill Gates, eh?

Not necessarily. Both WindowsUpdate and the "Add/Remove programs" tells me
that KB927779 is in fact installed. Several times. So who knows whether our
systems are vulnerable or not? I unchecked this one in update, too.

Sometimes the reason updates will continually prompt you is because
there is an update that supersedes it that needs to be installed. In
the case of this update there is one superseded update. Try
downloading it and installing it. This is the superseded update for
KB927779.

Re: Security Update for Windows XP (KB927779) wants to repeatedly

I had been installing this again and again using the automatic
updater. I visited the Windows update site to revirew my installed
updates and it told me i had successfully installed each time. While I
was there I installed it again from the Windows Update site 9which
should be exactly the same) and since then I haven't beeen asked to
install it again.

At the sme time I discovered I had a repeatedly failed update of an IE
patch. I have my programme files off my c drive and a registry entry o
point installers to my preferred location. I already knew that IE
updtes would fail unless I reset this registry entry to c:/program
files so i reset this in order to fix the IE patch, i don't know if
theis also had an effect on the XP patch.

If you aslo have your programme files on different drive or folder the
key is at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
\ProgramFilesDir

You have to reboot before you reset this value to your preferred one.

I've tried this and it didn't help.

I've tried the automatic update, Windows update, and manually downloading
the installer. None of the three made any difference in my case.

At one point in time I had the Program Files set to a different location,
but I reset that quite some time ago when an IE update failed, and then OE
refused to run any more. Since then, it's been set to the default location.
I don't suspect that should be causing the problem though. If having the
Program Files directory set differently in the past would cause it, I bet
many more than we're seeing now would have this problem too.

I solved this issue by deleting all entries in the registry matching
"927779" and installing the update manually with WindowsXP-KB927779-
x86-NOR.exe afterwards (probably WindowsXP-KB927779-x86-ENG.exe in
your case).

Re: Security Update for Windows XP (KB927779) wants to repeatedly

If you did a system restore and the restore point (i am sure it is) before
the date of the bad download, then it is not installed. My experience is
that the Windows Update scan has a merker somewhereiin the registry. To Make
sure, download the update and manually install. If it is already installed
it will not install a second time. If it does install (and I am sure it
will) it will then show up in add/remove programs as it should
