ALPS Touchpad Driver Update via Vista Update Service

Hi, I recently downloaded an "optional" device driver update for the ALPS
pointing device touchpad on my Dell Inspiron XPS laptop. The touchpad itself
stopped working even though the joystick and both sets of "mouse buttons"
worked fine. All radio button options are correct to use both the touchpad
and the joystick. I reverted to the original driver and touchpad operation
resumed normal operation. Anyon else experience this? How do you provide
feedback to Microsoft that their device driver has issues? I am using the
32bit version of Vista Ultimate. Thanks in advance! Joe

Hello Joe,

A common knowledge among more advanced users is to never take drivers from
windows update, if you really need a driver because the hardware is not
working good, go to Alps or Dell site and download the right driver from
there and install, remember : if it ain't broke do NOT fix it.

I'm not using a laptop but desktop running XP Pro. I got ALPs pointing
device hardware update notification plus VIA IDE primary/secondary hardware
updates. Like an idiot, I believed M$ had got it right and downloaded and
installed.

How wrong I was.

Machine forever rebooting both in normal and safe modes. Assumed VIA update
causing problem. Had to reboot to last known working configuration. Rescan
showed these updates again which I promptly checked to not show again.
However..............update history shows already installed. I dn't know
what to believe now!!!!???

Summary....DON'T accept M$ word on ANY hardware update. Go to manufacturer
site to check.
