    Windows XP Update Manager

I am having an ongoing a problem with the Windows Update Manager program and
could use some help fixing the problem. When I first boot up my computer I
    receive the following message:

"UpdateMng component has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
    sorry for the inconvenience.

    Details – AppName: updatemgr.exe AppVer: 5.0.7.9 ModName: prplsf.dll
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 0000b087 Bottom of Form"

I also get the same error that others are getting when they try and run the
    update manager program:

"Files required to use Microsoft Update are no longer registered or
    installed on your computer. "

Some how I think that these problems are related and have tried to
re-register all the files mentioned by TaurArian. However, much to my
frustration, the problem continues... any suggestions?

    Hi Cynthia,
    Updatemgr.exe is a EarthLink 5.0 Update Manager file and prplsf.dll is a
file from Propel Dial-Up Accelerator. I suggest that you remove the program
Propel Dial-Up Accelerator from Start/Control panel/Add or Remove programs
and re-register the files mentioned by TaurArian or follow the steps below
    to do that:
    1. Click Start, Run, type: notepad C:\register.bat and press Enter. Choose
    Yes
    when you are prompted.
    2. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the
    opened Notepad window:

    Re: Windows XP Update Manager

    Hi Anton!

Thanks for your help... I was able to get rid of my first problem with the
"UpdateMng component" error problem but I have been unsuccessful at
uninstalling Earthlink's Total Access & Accellerator programs. Sadly, my
Windows Update Manager still cannot find the files it is looking for...
inspite of following your lengthy instructions to the letter :-< Any more
suggestions, short of totally reformating everything from scratch?
