I have also attempted to install service pack 2 for Windows Vista several
times, and found it does not work correctly as Bigman correctly states wasted
hours. Why does windows update show an important update is ready for
installation when it will not install. Other work colleagues have also
experienced this issue. When will it be put right and stop wasting vital
    time!

Re: Service Pack 2 Windows Vista Ulimate (kb948465)

As you see Vista SP2 contains all the updates that were released since SP1,
so by downloading via AU (Automatic Updates) you only get what you need, by
downloading the full file you have everything plus you have it if you want it
for later if you require it.

For Service Packs, I prefer to download the full file and then install
offline after preparing the system first.

Methods to download the latest service pack (VISTA SP2)
Method 1: Turn on Automatic Updates (Recommended for most users)
Method 2: Check for updates on Windows Update (Same as Method 1 but not
    automatic)

Method 3: Obtain the latest Windows Vista service pack from the
Microsoft Download Center (the full file)
    <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935791/#Method3>

(Good to use if the computer on which you want to install the service pack
is not connected to the Internet)

    Go to <http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/dd262148.aspx> and look
    at the left side.

Things to know about SP2 and FAQs.

Review them thoroughly and see if that answers most or all of your
    questions.

    If not, repost here.

You will also note the download site available for the full download which
can be used instead of the Windows Update service.

Do you by chance have a USB external HDD attached to your system? I have a
WD My Book attached to my system and it was preventing SP2 from installing.
Once I removed it from my system (un-plugging it) SP2 installed with out
    problem.

Re: SERVICE PACK 2 WINDOWS VISTA ULIMATE (KB948465)

What did your search of the internet for error code 8007000e reveal? Until
you have found what the error codes reveal about your system and fixed the
cause, it is pointless to continue trying the install no less than 3 times.

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows Vista, but only for Service Pack 2 (SP2). This support for Windows
Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) is valid until November 26, 2009. Availability of
chat or e-mail support differs depending on your geographic location. Go to
    http://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...4&gprid=582034 &
    select appropriate category (e.g., Installation).

You'll find additional support for Vista SP2 issues in these forums:

Error message when you try to install Windows Vista Service Pack 2 or
Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2: "An internal error occurred while
    installing the service pack":

    ========================

    Installation Tips:

    • Your computer will restart several times during the installation process:
Make certain you've saved your work and closed all open applications before
    beginning the install.

    • Disable (1) your anti-virus application, (2) any real-time system
protections afforded by any anti-spyware applications (except Defender), &
    (3) your third-party firewall (if any) and then (4) enable the Windows
Firewall _before installing or uninstalling_ Vista SP2.

    • The installation process can take an hour or more: If you're installing
SP2 on a portable computer, make sure that you plug-in the power cord and
have the battery inserted into its bay.

    • Vista SP1 is a prerequisite for installing SP2. If you use Windows Update
or the Automatic Update feature in Windows Vista, you will not be offered
the option to install SP2 until you first install SP1.

    ==============================================================

HOW TO install Vista SP2 manually

    <QP>
Generally, these errors can occur if the system files are corrupted.

To make clear the current situation, I recommend downloading Windows Vista
Service Pack 2] in Normal Mode and installing it in Clean Boot Mode. Please
    follow the steps below.

Note: This SP2 installation can be affected by certain third party programs
running in the background. If you are running any third party applications
such as Spyblocker, Internet or web accelerators (programs designed to boost
the speed of the Internet connection), security or anti-virus programs
(McAfee, Norton, etc.), I recommend we temporarily disable or shut them down
during our troubleshooting process. Please be sure to enable them again when
the update process has been completed.

Step 1: Download Windows Vista Service Pack 2 Standalone Installer
    ===================================================
    1. Download Windows Vista SP2 from the link below according to your System
    Type:

....Windows Vista Service Pack 2 - Five Language Standalone for x32-based
    systems (Size: 348.3 MB)
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...2-a5c3199ea2b3

....Windows Vista Service Pack 2 - Five Language Standalone for x64-based
    systems (Size: 577.4MB)
    http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...-X64-wave0.exe

    2. Save the download to your desktop, do not Run it!

Step 2: Install Windows Vista SP2 in Clean Boot mode
    ========================================
Please disable all startup items and third party services when booting to
avoid conflict when installing Vista SP1:

    1. Click "Start", type: MSCONFIG in the search box and press Enter.

Note: Please click "Continue" if the "User Account Control" window pops up.

    2. Click "Services", check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click
"Disable All" (if it is not gray).
    3. Click "Startup", click "Disable All" and click "OK".

Note: Temporarily disabling the Startup Group only prevents the startup
programs from loading at startup. This shouldn't affect the system or other
programs. We can manually run these programs later. Go ahead and reboot your
system when prompted as you are exiting MsConfig.

    4. After rebooting, right-click on the downloaded Windows Vista Service Pack
2 Standalone Installer, select "Run as Administrator" (if necessary) and
follow the instructions to install Windows Vista SP2.

To restore the computer to use a Normal Startup, repeat step 1 above. Then
click "Normal Startup" on the General tab, click "OK", and then restart the
    computer.

I went around and around with this SP2 install having it rollback with an
error 0x8007000e. I tried all of the recomended fixes. Then it hit me. A
memory error?! A while back I applied the Vista version of the 3G switch to
get a game to work properly. Giving applications up to 3GB of memory at the
expense of the operating system. I set it back to the default of 2048,
rebooted the computer and reapplied the Vista SP2. It worked!!.

To look at what your setting is set at:
    Run Command shell as administrator
    Run command
    bcdedit /enum

    look for variable increaseuserva
the number is the number of megabytes 2048 is the default and is OK and no
    need to change it.

to change the setting run command
    bcdedit /set increaseuserva 2048

You need to have service pack 1 before it will work. Gaurentee it.

I don't know why Vista SP2 was necessary. Like SP1, they launch it before a
test run and now my sound doesn't work even though it says in Control Panel
that everything's just fine. Like always, Microsoft's Improvements are My
    EnScrewments.

You do realize the issue is with *your* machine - right? You getting a mac
doesn't mean you won't experience a problem that is just with *your* machine
    again - just with a mac. ;-)

The last time I had trouble where I tried everything I knew to do,
everything I could research around the problem to do and finally broke down
and called Microsoft - it was around installing Widows Vista Service Pack
2 - and it failing everytime. Yes - it was offered to me, yes I tried
everything _short of_ a clean installation. Even tried a repair
installation of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 - and it told me my version was
*newer*. It was then they suggested I do a clean installation to resolve my
troubles. WHile that likely would have worked - it was a problem I wanted
resolved, not given up on and I did not feel like backing up this particular
client's stuff after the day or so of work just to clean installa it and
have another day or so of work restoring it for a 'might work' work-around.

That's when I solved it myself - something Microsoft probably couldn't
suggest (although I don't know why *if* they actually sent you a Windows
Vista integrated with Service Pack 1 (meaning the full installation media
for Windows Vista w/SP1 - could install a fully patched up to SP1 version of
Windows Vista from scratch type media) - I grabbed a copy of Windows Vista
with SP2 integrated and performed the repair installation on the machine. I
was able to do this because I have an MSDN subscription. They had a copy of
Windows Vista that works happily with the OEM product key (amongst others)
the machine used - so it is not against any EULAs, etc.

The repair installation of Windows Vista w/SP2 integrated not only resolved
the issue - the machine had never ran better. It was literally night and
day to what it was since the day it was purchased by the customer.

Now - the customer has Windows 7 (upgraded from WIndows Vista) and it runs
    even better.

So - if you have access to Windows Vista installation media with SP2
integrated - I'd backup your important data one more time (hopefully you
have a periodic/consistent backup method for your stuff already in place -
if not - start one -- even if you have a mac, you'd be unwise not t use time
machine) and attempt the repair installation of Windows Vista with the
integrated SP2 media. You'll more than likely end up with everything
working, cleaned up and better than it was before.

Many thanks for your kind help,,
I'd hv solved my problem, by the following.

    - Start, Run, then typing msconfig
    - In Startup tap, I deactivated all software including Antivirus except Microsoft's
    - I shut down my laptop n let the system start installing SP2.

Actually, SP2 had been installed smoothly n in less than hour,, hopefully these suggestion cud be helpful for other.
