svchost, wuauclt using 100% CPU on startup

Everyone time machine starts up, svchost uses 100% CPU for over 30mins.

Installing KB916089 (FIX: When you run Windows Update to scan for
updates that use Windows Installer, including Office updates, CPU
utilization may reach 100 percent for prolonged periods) didn't fix the
problem.

Anyone else seeing this?

Deleting C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution makes no difference.

Windows version? Is Windows Defender also installed and is it v1.1.1593.0?

Re: svchost, wuauclt using 100% CPU on startup

I had Defender version 1.1.1347.0 installed. Windows XP SP2.

I have done the following steps (with the Hotfix KB916089 installed):

- Upgraded Defender to v1.1.1593.0 : problem still exists
- Removed Defender completely and reinstalled Defender v1.1.1593.0:
problem still there.
- Removed Defender completely: FIXES ISSUE.

With Defender removed, triggering a manual microsoft update works
(wuauclt /detectnow)

Also, I noticed with Defender installed, manually running Update
Definitions in Defender causes svchost to immediately use 100% CPU, with
no success after 20mins (Dell Latitude C610, 1GB RAM)

In my case there appears to be a race condition between Defender and
Auto Update.

Re: svchost, wuauclt using 100% CPU on startup

I, too, have the exact same problem. The hotfix doesn't work, and the only
solution is to revert back to Windows Update (and check Office Update
manually).

What makes it even odder is that when Task Manager shows 100% CPU during
startup (or when Microsoft Update is manually run), there isn't even any
hard-drive activity. You would think that if the CPU is being fully taxed,
the hard drive would be going wild. But, nothing...not even a whimper out of
the hard drive. Still, it is nearly impossible for anything else to be
opened while the 100% CPU is in effect.

I've just got off the phone with a fellow on the Windows Update
Development Team who says that this is a known issue and it continues to
stump their team. Let's just hope a solution comes soon!

Try deleting the contents of this folder (or the folder itself) & reboot:

C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore

If no joy, try deleting the contents of this folder (or the folder itself) &
reboot:

C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution

Re: svchost, wuauclt using 100% CPU on startup

I had this problem and stopped it, but i now have to manually check for updates. To sort it go:

Start>Run
Type services.msc
Double click automatic updates from the list
Change startup type to disabled
Click apply and restart your system

You wont be plagued by the 10% cpu usage all the time but you wont get the lates updates automatically, but a good quick fix until microsoft get their act together and pull off a decent patch!!!!

Re: svchost, wuauclt using 100% CPU on startup

This bug is causing a huge waste of time and lost productivity -- where do I
send the bill? Microsoft's handling of it is unprofessional and disastrous.
The latest: tried to set up a partner's laptop to go on a trip, installed
software updates, and now it is stuck in this 95 to 100% CPU usage by
svchost.exe which can only be mitigated by turning off Windows/Microsoft
Updates altogether (yes, I tried both). They could mitigate by reducing the
priority so that at least the machine would be somewhat usable, but nah, the
only way around is to kill update notifications altogether.

Is this sabotaging of XP machines a not so subtle way to force people to
migrate to Vista? Well, guess where my $ are *not* going...

Re: svchost, wuauclt using 100% CPU on startup

I have a very similar problem:
It's svchost and wuauclt that are causing CPU spikes, although for me it's about once per hour for a couple of minutes... I've not got Windows Defender installed on this machine though... any other ideas what I could try?

Cheers
Alex
