    Latest updates won't install

Greetings! I'm trying to install today's (11/16/2006) updates for my Windows
XP machine; but despite multiple retries and even a reboot, all 7 updates are
failing. And when they do, all I see is the following error message. I con't
see anything else in the event log or anywhere.

Now that's what I see on my screen; but there must be some sort of hidden
text or script or something at play here; because when I highlight that text,
copy it to the clipboard, and paste it into a text editor (such as this
window), I see the following more extensive message:

So I guess I've got two questions:

    1. Are the hidden errors hidden because they don't apply to me? Or are these
things I should try to fix?

    2. If these aren't my problem, how can I diagnose what went wrong? This is
    not exactly helpful:

    RE: Latest updates won't install

    Martin:

I had the same problem. I was able to download the update, but always got
hung up on IE7. I'm running XP w/SP2. Even after disabling my anti-spy and
    virus ware.

What I finally ended up doing, was (sucessfully) deleting IE7 installation
from the group and installing them for the IE7. That working.

But, I still can't get "7" to sucesfully install. It go through the effort,
    but never completes it.

    Any suggestions?????

Unfortunately, I don't have any IE7 updates in my list, so that doesn't help
    me. Thanks anyway!

    Anything in the WU log?

How to view the Update log in Windows

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type %windir%\windowsupdate.log
    and then click OK.

Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate the error code(s)
associated with the latest failed attempt to download/install. If appropriate copy
and paste the error codes into this thread so someone may be able to assist you. On
the other hand, you may be able to find the error code and other suggestions by
    searching the Newsgroup.

Also check Windows folder for file called KB******.log (****** = number of update ie
KB896688) and post the contents of the failed update.
This may provide further clues as to why the update failed.

Thanks, TaurAurian! That's exactly the nudge I needed.

Of course, I do wonder why instructions on reading that log don't appear on
the page automatically when there's a failure. They give all these "useful"
tips like try it again, or try the troubleshooter; but they don't say, "Hey,
maybe your problem's in the log file."

    RE: Latest updates won't install

Looked through several messages and related threads but this seems to come
the closest to the same problem I was having (regardless of IE
version)(XPsp2). The suggestion to look at the update log mentioned here led
    to this:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910341
which involved editing (adding to in my case) the registry. It did solve the
problem though. I can't imagine why it existed in the first place. Apparently
the auto updates had quit the last of October.

    RE: Latest updates won't install

    Greetings,
here's how I got mine to finally install:
1-Searched for lccwiz.dll & renamed (dll version was correct)
2-Uninstalled or removed KB919029 in Control Panel then rebooted.
    3-Allowed update to complete.
Apparently, it appears that the update did install but didn't register
    somewhere. Hope this helps.
    Peace!

    RE: Latest updates won't install

Hi help! I'm not getting any help from Microsoft. I keep getting error
mesage 80240020 in the windowsupdate log. No updates will install. I can't
seem to get anywhere doing what the customer service tech told me to do.
How does on fix this error?

    Thanks much!

    Re: Latest updates won't install

Examine the update log again - see what errors are coming up.
Also examine the individual kb logs in the Windows directory/folder.
I'm not familiar with I/O Device errors.
Basically what we need is to know more- perhaps someone with experience in I/O Device
errors might be able to assist.
I've just examined my log because I haven't received the automatic updates and I've
    got a Error 0x80200010
I'll try a manual download now and see what happens.

    |I followed that link, which if I understand it, said to try again. So did
    | and with custom instead of express. one at a time, etc. pulling my hair
    | out. I also searched microsoft for a few of those updates and downloaded
    | them directly, without using automatic updates. They did download and
    | started installing, but ended short with a error with an I/O Device.
    |
    | Am I missing something or do you have any other ideas?

    Re: Latest updates won't install

Okay, what I did was clean out the softwaredistribution/download folder - tried WU
    again - still failed.
Manually downloaded one update and installed successfully - I allegedly had 6.
This update required a reboot - I rebooted.
Then AU kicked in and downloaded - 4 updates - all successful.
Ran the Baselne Security Analyser just to check - all updates are installed.

Don't know what fixed it really - but, perhaps it was a combination of clearing the
    temporary download folder, rebooting etc.

    | Examine the update log again - see what errors are coming up.
    | Also examine the individual kb logs in the Windows directory/folder.
    | I'm not familiar with I/O Device errors.
    | Basically what we need is to know more- perhaps someone with experience in I/O
    Device
    | errors might be able to assist.

They did download and
    || started installing, but ended short with a error with an I/O Device.
    ||
    || Am I missing something or do you have any other ideas?

    Re: Latest updates won't install

    Hi Kaylene,
Your last suggestion did the trick I think. Clear out
    C:\windows\softwaredistribution\download and then re-boot. After rebooting I
tried to Express install again and had the same failure but when I selected
Custom and then picked the security patches...the download worked perfectly.
I also noticed that the files are 0kb in size when choosing the Express
install vs. 515kb and 2.30Mb when using the Custom download option. Maybe the
    express file targets are corrupt.
    Thanks, Mark

Hi Mark, glad you got your updates - it's a mystery sometimes why it works one day
    and not the next.

    | Hi Kaylene,
    | Your last suggestion did the trick I think. Clear out
    | C:\windows\softwaredistribution\download and then re-boot.
