Windows Update Download

I found a strange folder in my main C: drive today called:
C:\af467b61d9709fabdd2cf04220bbdd57
In it is a text files called:
msxml4-KB927978-enu
It conatins a load of gobbledegoop but seems to relate to a Microsoft
security download from yesterday realting to the MSXML 4.0 SP2 update.
I have never seen such a folder created at this level despite many many
security downloads. Can anyone comment ?
Thanks

I have a similar entry after yesterdays update.
c:\d8231d17e70d4dd289\msxml.log

In the log file is a verbose report of the update trail.
Apparently, Microsoft's most recent update didn't clean up after
itself very well.

Respectfully,

Trev

Glad I am not the only one - do you think it is OK to move the folder out of
the way ????
Thanks,
Mike

Re: Windows Update Download

Hi Everyone. I have the same type of folder but mine is
C:/b23ba9fd2dcf9f567bf9e7,
it is a msxml4-kb927978-enu folder inside. Has anyone deleted this folder
with no problems yet. kb927978 is properly installed and shows in the
add/remove programs. By the way I have MSXML 4.0 SP2 Parser and SDK installed
and shown in add/remove programs. I don't even know what it is or what it
does or how it got installed onto my computer. If its installed onto your
computer than updates will come. I tried to read the explanation of MSXML 4.0
SP2 Parser and SDK from the Microsoft.com website but the explanation was way
over my head.

RE: Windows Update Download

Have a similar problem - but in my case the folder with the log file is on my
second (external) drive - not the C drive on which Windows is installed !! On
my add/remove programs list MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB927978)is shown as installed.
Hope some knowledgeable person can advise.

RE: Windows Update Download

The very same thing happened to me. I would like to know if it is safe to
delete this folder containing the msxml4-KB927978-enu text file. Anyone?

ME TOO. The file: msxml4-KB927978-enu.log was in a folder called:
169544da8f20ab74dd3b30e0a63c53
BUT it was in my D drive (which is only a back-up drive, no programs or
windows folders)!?! It appeared on 19/11/2006 at 23:32

Ditto as VINCE said, quote: "I tried to read the explanation of MSXML
4.0 SP2 Parser and SDK from the Microsoft.com website but the explanation was
way over my head." Far too complex for little ol' me.

Come on, someone knowledgeable please answer; does anyone knowledgeable read
these cries for help?

having had the same problem I searched the Web and found the following on :

(You might have a look at the full thread)
Q :WHY did it write a log to my external drive?
A :This is normal. XP will use for temporary storage purposes the connected
drive with the most free space.
It creates temporary folders named similar to yours ........ It usually
cleans up after itself when done with Windows Update, but not always.

It seems to be just a log file of the installation and can probably be
safely deleted

Thanks for info Tony.

I have also had some expert advice from PC Advisor along the same lines:

"Its a glitch in removing the .txt file after the security file update has
been installed, the folder is simply the notepad 'notes' of the recent MS
update KB927978. You may safely delete the folder."

So that's what I have done. Hope everybody else in these posts feel happy
to delete the folder now.
