How many more times will .Net Framework 2.0 need to be unistalled and reinstalled again? This is the second time in the last couple of months this solution was recommended as a fix for a failed update. This time, it took almost four hours of my time to research the problem, uninstall Net Framework, find a manual installer, and reinstall again. The last time also took up several hours of my time. At this point, I'm beginning to think it may be easier to just not install the Microsoft updates. I've had two viruses on my computers over the last ten years and fixing those were easier and quicker than all this nonsense. stewart |

Then you have your solution. ;-) I have had no problem installing the updates on the thousands of computers I have pushed it to. As I said before, I just did a new installation of Net Framework a very short time ago, so there should be no issues whatsoever. I have over twenty years of experience and run my computers clean with very few modifications (certainly nothing at all potentially damaging). >Do you use/need the .NET Framework? Sadly, that is not an option. This is a fairly new computer with a lot of fairly new software on it, several of them requiring Framework 2.0. stewart |

My feelings entirely. I've only a couple of programmes that require .Net framework but I'll be damned if I'm going to uninstall & reinstall it until someone comes up with a solution that works. BTW, when I try to instal & update it says that download is nil as it's already here. If the original d/l was corrupted it could be causing the problem. Where it is stored so I can delete it & redownload the U/D? One of my colleagues came up with a solution to this problem which involved a re-install of the Windows Installer. |

| Re: .Net Update (KB922770) Won't Install <-- how many more times
I am having the same issue with KB922770. BSOD appears on reboot with a STOP error. The yellow 'updates ready to install' is displayed in the taskbar, when I attempt to download - it fails. When I run windows update and it detects this download, it shows me that the download is 0 kbytes?? Attempting to redownload causes it to fail. If I attempt to download the update manually from MS website, the download shown (there are three KB.....X86. KB....X64, KB IA64) are between 2.2Mb and 3.7Mb. Attempting to download any of these causes an error which states "The installation source for this product is not available, Verify that the source exists and that you can access it" Bottom line, I cant remove the KB update as it doesnt show on the Control Panel>Add Remove Programs listing, I cant install the update as it either thinks the download is 0kbytes or the manual download says I dont have the source product to update (which I obviously do, or I wouldnt require the update) Any (unsarcastic) advise would be welcome. |

That's probably the worst part of all this (from the MS perspective). If this keeps up, more and more people are going to lose faith in the Windows Update system. > BTW, when I try to instal & update it says that > download is nil as it's already here. If the original > d/l was corrupted it could be causing the problem. > Where it is stored so I can delete it & redownload > the U/D? The update installer file itself probably isn't corrupt since Windows Update at least does a fairly good job of error checking during the download. On my computer, another uninstall/reinstall of Net Framework did the trick. Somewhere along the way, the update file gets deleted. Anyway, a key part this time seems to be restarting after each step. 1. Uninstall Net Framework 2.0 in Add/Remove and then RESTART. 2. Download a manual installer for Net Framework. You can find it here... http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en 3. Install Net Framework using the manual installer and then RESTART. 4. Now go to the Windows Update site and check for updates. The update should be listed again and install correctly. Good luck. stewart |

Terry <Terry@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: > (snip) When I run windows update and it detects this > download, it shows me that the download is 0 kbytes?? > Attempting to redownload causes it to fail. This is normal, Terry. Once the file is downloaded to your computer, Windows Update will always say afterwards that the download is 0 kbytes. That's because it doesn't have to download the update file again since it's already on your computer. What is happening now, when you run Windows Update, is a failed installation, not a failed download. > If I attempt to download the update manually from MS > website, the download shown (there are three KB.....X86. > KB....X64, KB IA64) are between 2.2Mb and 3.7Mb. Okay, you went to the wrong site. Here is where you want to go to get the manual installer. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en Notice this is the latest x86 version, which is exactly what you want. Make sure you actually download it, with it appearing somewhere on your computer afterwards. Now follow these steps exactly... 1. Uninstall Net Framework 2.0 in Add/Remove and then RESTART. 2. Install Net Framework using the manual installer you just downloaded and then RESTART. 3. Now go to the Windows Update site and check for updates. The update should be listed again and install correctly. Notice the two very important restarts in that process. Don't skip over them. Good luck. stewart |

| Re: .Net Update (KB922770) Won't Install <-- how many more times
Stewart, I did your steps 1-4, but there I got a failed installation of the KB922770 update. I am set up to run Windows Update automatically, it ran at step 4 (instead of going manually to the Windows Update website) and the update installation attempt gave me a failed message. At that point I removed the KB922770 update using the Add/Remove Programs under Control Panel, RESTARTED, downloaded the manual update to a different folder on my hard drive, ran that, got a success message, RESTARTED, and found Windows Update running automatically again on the next boot, wanting me to run the same update which had failed that way before. I declined to install it, went to Windows Update web site, which told me I had no High-Priority updates needing installation. I think I'm OK now, but am a bit confused at the contradictory messages from Windows Update running automatically on my machine, and from what the Update website had to say. |

Hi, A small comment: You should not download the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility from Softpedia. They have an old version of it that in some cases does bad things to your computer. Microsoft have an updated version, you will find a download link here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/ Terry wrote: > RESOLVED: > Here are my steps (no guarantees that this will work on your system - but > here goes > Run Windows Install Cleanup > (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Securit...-Utility.shtml) > > Remove .NET framework 2.0 Using Installer Clenup > > Go to ADD/Remove Programs > > Click REMOVE for .net Framework 2.0 > > It goes thru an install process (remove was not a provided option) > > Install successful > > Reboot > > Run Windows Update > > Install KB922770 > > Install Successful > > Reboot > > Login to Technet, > > Send nice thank you message to Terry > -- torgeir, Microsoft MVP Software Distribution, Porsgrunn Norway |
