I had exactly the same problem. Solution according to message is to first try and re-install the update. But I don't know how to do that. "sdwebguy@gmail.com" wrote: > I am having the same problem. No solution yet. Just deselect the framework in Microsoft Update. Still looking. -- Rich Harris Senior Systems and Programming Analyst Santa Barbara county APCD "sdwebguy@gmail.com" wrote: > I am having the same problem. Havent seen much about it. You can reinstall the update in a lot of ways. The easiest is to run 'Windows Update' or 'Microsoft Update' from the 'Start' / 'All Prograns' menu. Or you can follow the links to the security bulletin and use the download link there to get just the framework package. I may try to force a reinstall of Framework 2.0 next if I can find a patched version. I also put in an email help request to Microsoft and I haven't heard anything there and it's coming up on 24 hours. -- Rich Harris Senior Systems and Programming Analyst Santa Barbara county APCD "Deeg" wrote: > I had exactly the same problem. Rich, thanks. I guess I'll try the download link, as no update appears using the normal MicrosoftUpdate. I suspect things really turned rotten due to a hard crash/stop at failure time. For your information here's a summary of other responses from a thread started Oct 10: << "Rob J" wrote: > Try the following: > download and run the file at > http://astebner.sts.winisp.net/Tools...eanup_tool.zip > for .NET 2.0 > > Log onto the Microsoft Update web site - custom - and reinstall .NET 2.0 - > after the reinstall select custom again and you should get 2 priority updates > - install both. > > This worked for me - hope it helps > > "joelw135" wrote: > > > I am unable to install the latest security update to Framework 2.0 it fails > > everytime. > > I have tried to manual install with no success. Thank you for your very good advice. I performed exactly what you have written and it worked for me like a charm. When I ran the file "cleanup_tool.exe" I choose the option to cleanup ".NET Framework - All Versions". Thanks again Zeev --- Bit of a problem with re-instal of .NET 2 due to an installation monitoring program - disabled monitor prog and everything went fine you so much! Worked great on two machines. Third machine did not need the fix. Curious though.. Three machines... All Legally Licensed installation CD's of Microsoft Windows XP Professional (Three total). Found one difference... First Machine... XP Professional with SP1 included on CD updated to SP2 with the Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD from Microsoft... Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (KB922770) would not install... until using your method. Thanks! Second Machine... another XP Professional with SP1 included on CD updated to SP2 with the Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD from Microsoft... Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (KB922770) would not install... until using your method. Thanks again! Third Machine... XP Professional with SP2 included on CD. The Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (KB922770) updated successfully without having the change anything. Only difference between the machines is the way SP2 had been installed. The last time there was a security update for the Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0, I had to use a work around for the first and second machines then as well but not the third machine. Go Figure. Not sure the relation or why. Thank you again for your help. :) --- Thanks for the advice Rob. KB922770 finally installed! I did the same as "zsmi":> clean up all versions. I have SP2. When I went back to Microsoft Update, there were three (3) SP1 updates (1. KB886903, 2. Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1, and 3. Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.1). I went ahead and installed all udpdates. Should I get SP1 updates when I have SP2? Did cleaning up all versions mess things up of am I O.K.? --- go to Downloads.Microsoft.com download/save to a temp folder .NET 2.0 dated a few months ago uninstall from add/remove your current .NET 2.0 reboot then install the current .NET you downloaded return to update.Microsoft.com for the update --- This worked after trying a "normal" install 3 times! Went to microsoft.com then to download section and d/led the latest net 2.0, uninstalled the old 2.0, rebooted installed the new version, then went to microsoft update and lo and behold!! It worked!! --- >> ================================================= "Rich Harris" wrote: > You can reinstall the update in a lot of ways. I tried add/remove. The installer crashes on both 'repair & 'remove'. I tried a new install. The installer only allows & crashes on both 'repair & 'remove'. -- Rich Harris Senior Systems and Programming Analyst Santa Barbara county APCD "Rich Harris" wrote: > Error Code 0x800706BE via KB922770 Security Update .NET framework 2.0 > > Update history show the above. | RE: Error Code 0x800706BE via KB922770 Security Update .NET framework
I believe that I have solved the primary problem. But I'm not sure of the original cause nor of any other effects of the original cause. I'm also not sure of the side effects of my cure. I have been able to apply the .NET Framework 2.0 Security Update. The security Updates setup.exe was failing or hanging. Indeed any method for manipulating the .NET framework was failing or hanging. The root cause seemed to be the fact that the IIS Admin Service would fail to stop because it failed to stop the WWWP & FTP service because the services were in a 'starting' state and could not be stopped nor whould they go to started. As a result the default web site on the client was not started and was probably hung somewhat also. Setup.exe failed to finish and in fact hung hard because it could not stop the IIS Admin service. At this point; 1 the security upgrade wouldn't run by any method tried. 2 It hung 'Microsoft Update' & 'Windows Update' in express mode or custom if fw 2.0 was selected. 3 the hung update could not be killed, most of the time. a) Nor would the PC shut-down, b) nor restart, c) nor allow a log off. A System power off WAS required. System was functional though. 4 the framework would not repair or remove, setup hung of course. 5 iis admin was hung trying to shutdown. could only be stopped by killing inetinfo.exe. 6 wwwp & ftp services were in a starting state and could not be stopped. Had to set to disable, wait, let fw2.0 repair run a bit till it hung again, reset wwwp & ftp to automatic, wait, set to disable, wait, set to automatic. Repair then finished with FW 2.0. [Repair appeared to need to be done because windows thought the Update was not finished yet. This appeared to cause all sorts of issues. The FW2.0 repair appeared to fix these.] Problem was not solved. Still couldn't run Security Update, www & ftp were not running, default web site was down, many tools & services didn't run or were bad. Had to use Add/Remove Windows components to remove WWW services and everything under it. After adding those back, and another repair of fw 2.0 (I think) the Security Update would finally run. The services I know to check seemed to be running correctly. I do not believe that IIS Admin service, WWWP service, & FTP service were in trouble before the October updates were applied by "Microsoft Update". I don't know this for sure though. ======= Other people out there are having similar problems according to some forums I checked. THE .NET FRAMEWORK 2.0 UPDATE IS BUGGY BECAUSE IT CAN HANG. -- Rich Harris Senior Systems and Programming Analyst Santa Barbara county APCD "Rich Harris" wrote: > Error Code 0x800706BE via KB922770 Security Update .NET framework 2.0 > > Update history show the above.
