| CPU Usage to 100% due to Microsoft/Windows Update
Hello I just wanted to report that last versions of Windows update and expecially Microsoft Update use really too much CPU. I have a 700mhz old PC at home and it takes 45 minutes to scan MU updates (yes, 45 minutes with MU I'm not joking. The PC has a clean install of windows, office and a few other utilities) and most of the times it goes timeout because the computer hangs for a while during the update-check: so it continues and continues to check for updates automatically and hanging in an infinite loop. Pratically that PC is unusable without the updates disabled because every 1-2 hours it starts checking for the updates again to download them so it hangs for another 45 minutes (and naturally it doesn't download anything because it goes timeout) and then this repeats forever. I installed MU on other PCs I have at home (I have other 2 PCs and 2 laptops with XP installed) and I had the same identical problem: WU/MU hangs everything when it checks for updates. I had to disable each service one by one to find out without doubts that the Automatic Updates service was the culprit. And like if that test wasn't enough I did clean install on a virtual machine to check out if I would have had the same MU/WU behaviour: I was right. So I decided to search on internet and I found out that a lot of people had crazy CPU usage caused by svchost.exe most of the times caused by Automatic Updates. I also opened a new thread on MSFN and found other people having the same identical problem: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=80372 At least if you don't want to find out where the bug or the bad implementation is I think you could get around the problem by launching Automatic Updates without using svchost.exe (standalone service) (and by using a lower priority (you did it on windows defender on vista you could do it for windows updates on XP)) or by instanciating a new svchost.exe just for the Automatic Updates service to avoid AU hanging the other shared services launched by the same svchost.exe instance. Please fix this enormous CPU usage I don't want to be forced to upgrade just because WU/MU hangs the computer. Also that bug/problem hurts a lot of customers who installed Live Messenger. Why? Because Live messenger installes the live toolbar, the live toolbar enables MU by default. So please, get this fixed: I can't believe I have to download every time every single office update/windows desktop search update and install them by hand all the times (and wait for them to install): I don't want to waste 2-3 hours of my life every time new office updates come out. Thanks. |
