Update Restart Is In An Endless Loop

Hi, everyone.

I hope someone can help me. I searched the newsgroup and found a
couple of reports of this problem, but no solutions.

I am running Windows XP Pro SP2. Since downloading the most
recent update, I continue to get the "Updating your computer is
almost complete. You must restart your computer...." dialog over
and over and over. It makes it almost impossible to do anything
on my PC, and if I reboot, it makes no difference; it tells me to
do it again.

Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Keith,

Don't reboot, yet. Go to, unless you have it, being the Belarc Advisor. (Latest is version 7.2a)

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html It is a Free Download. Either Save it or Run it. If Saved, then click on it to install it. Once installed, it creates a Snapshot of everyithing installed. (If you already have it installed, run it.) Click on Microsoft Security Updates which takes you to Microsoft Installed Hotfixes. Scroll down and see if all Hotfixes are properly installed. If not, reinstall the Hotfix by clicking on details first. Then use the link for IT Professionals. Click the version for your operating system. Click Download the Update. When downloading, click Run instead of Save.

Keith,

Reboot to Safe Mode. If any drivers were installed during the updating,
suggest using the Roll Back driver function :
Right click My Computer on the Desktop or Start Menu, choose Properties.
Click the Hardware tab.

1. Start Device Manager.
2. Double-click the device for which you want to restore the driver.
3. Click the Driver tab, and then click the Roll Back Driver button.

Thanks very much to you and to MowGreen for your replies.

I have used Belarc in the past, but didn't have it installed and
wasn't aware that it tracked security patches. It informed me
that I needed to install one update, and when I clicked on the
link, I was informed that I needed to reboot before I could
install it.

To Microsoft's credit, they included a link that told me how to
remove the entry from the registry that was forcing my constant
reboots! I did so, ran the update, and everything is copasetic.

Thanks a lot!
