Error Code: 0x80004002

I keep getting this error while attempting to install first batch of updates
on fresh OS Install on my Dell Inspiron 1100. I used the Dell Reinstallation
CD which ships with XP Pro SP1.

I followed the recommendations given Bill Cart below and retried but
evidently I'm facing a different issue.

after installing SP2 I received the 0x80244018 error code. So I
tried the proxycfg -d thing as well as stopping the Automatic Updates Service
- then deleting the contents of C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download -
then restarting the Automatic Updates Service and then ran WU again. This
time it ran successfully and I got all updates.

Recently had to Repair Windows XP: my SP2 version is now SP1.

Every time I try to update the system I get get update failure notices and
the following message: Error Code: 0x80004002 - this error code applies to
every update I've tried since repairing windows.

Searching through the Knowledge Base I couldn't find anything relating this
error to Windows Update. Anyone got any ideas? I'm starting to get pretty
frustrated...

Try the following:-

Click Start, select run and type the following (pressing okay after each one):-

net.exe stop wuauserv

regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll
regsvr32.exe wups.dll
regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll
regsvr32.exe MSXML3.dll

net.exe start wuauserv

Try WU again.

If that hasn't helped, then you may have to reinstall the Windows Update Agent.
