Windows Update fails

Windows update is no longer working.
Recently I tried update and got this:

I dont get an error code .... just failed update.

Go to the Windows Update or Microsoft Update web site, and click "Review
your update history". Locate the entries for the failed updates, which will
display a red cross in the Status column. Click on the red cross to produce
a pop-up window giving an error code and diagnostic data. (If the pop-up
does not appear, then disable all third-party popup-blockers, such as Google
toolbar or anti-malware applications). Paste that information into a
follow-up in this thread.

Also, paste the contents of the file C:\WINDOWS\WgaNotify.log into a
follow-up in this thread.

At MS Windows Update page and then Review Your Update History the recent
failed attempts I posted to update are not listed. Kinda strange.

However for one of the attempted updates it shows successful as an automatic
update.

It looks as if the WgaNotify problem was corrected by an automatic update in
the early hours this morning.

Can you now try Windows Update or Microsoft Update again to see whether your
other update problem has now gone away.

Well, I was looking for updates and discoverd that XP was not been updated
since mid 2005 :)
Ok so installed the WGA and than, nothing anymore, it sticks with 0%
downloaded updates. I run IE beta7 because I got a valid copy according to
the online check.
After that, still no go. 24 updates can not be installed. This is really a
pain in the ass, I am working for 2 weeks now to fix it, tried everything, no
go.

I got a dutch version and I looked for the WGAnotify.log, I got a WGA.log,
seems to be the same statrting contents as freecashfun.

Check your RPC service. If it is set to use NT AUTHORITY\NetworkService
change it to local system and reboot your computer. This should then allow
you to install the update

1. How much RAM do you have installed in this PC?

2. Can you try again, having first disabled all anti-virus, anti-spyware,
download accelerator, etc that you might have installed.

I have 2 GB of RAM, Core Duo 2 processor.
Now I have turned off my anti-virus, Windows Firewall, Windows Defender. I
don't use any download accelerator. And I have tried to search for updates
and I have the same error.
Several days ago I installed Windows updates with all the above stuff on and
everything seemed to be okay.

No, it is not. It is my home computer. I only have a router to access to
internet from two home computers. The computer with Vista has a static ip
address on the router only, that's all I think. Vista was updated previously
via that router. Unexpectacly that error occured and now I cannot update my
Vista.
Please, any suggestions on that error, I will appreciate any help very much.

Sorry, nothing to suggest. I did find some references to that error code,
but nothing that matches what you describe.

You might try that system hooked directly to your internet access (bypass
the router). Beyond that, no guesses. BTW, your Vista Ultimate is an RTM
(non-Beta) version, right?

Yes, I have an RTM Vista Ultimate. My most recent check for updates dates
back to 17.06.2007. I will try to connect to internet directly. Maybe will
the windows update log be helpful? I could post some pieces of the log that I
hope will clarify the problem.

Also I have now noticed in the update history that one of updates failed to
be installed. It is "Windows Update software 7.0.6000.374" update. This
update has status 'failed' and an error code 8024D00F. It is one of the
latest updates installed.
Maybe is it the root of the problem? This Windows update software failed to
be installed and it is why Vista cannot update.

Give this a try:

On the Start/Run line enter "net stop wuauserv" (without the quotes). You
should see a CMD window flash open then close.

Delete the entire SoftwareDistribution folder (located in C:\Windows).

Open Control Panel, then Internet Options. On the General tab click
"Delete" and then delete your Temporary Internet Files. Give it time to
complete, then OK your way out.

Restart the computer. This will allow the necessary service(s) to get a
clean start without any hooks left pointing to now-missing content.

Now open Control Panel, then the Windows Update applet, and elect to scan
for updates. Hopefully the new v7 controls will download/install on your
Vista system without errors. Watch for any notices asking your permission
to install the update and give those a "yes" click (you may not see
anything; watch for the yellow ActiveX safety warning banner).

If the new controls install without error, you should be good to go for
further WU/MU activities.

I have followed the procedure you described. After all I have tried to
update Windows and it has failed with the error I got previously (8000FFFF).
In addition to all I have lost the update history. I viewed "ReportingEvents"
file with this error:
