A solution to WGA (KB892130) failure to install

I, like a lot of people with genuine copies of windows, have experienced
problems with installing KB892130. I've been in and out of a lot of posts on
the subject and tried various offered solutions which have (and have not)
worked for some people. After numerous variations, the following has worked
and I'm now able to run the update service as it was intended.

    Download psexec.exe from:-

    http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/PsExec.html

and put the file in root directory (C:\)

Download the WGA update executable from:-

    http://www.download.windowsupdate.co...82dcea49a0.exe

    and install in C:\temp.

Rename the file in C:\temp to WGA.exe (original file toooooo long)

    At DOS command line type:-

    psexec -i -s c:\temp\WGA.exe

The above tested and works - for me at least - Hope it works for others

Many thanks for all the inputs that got me to this position - there are too
many to mention by name - I just grateful to the newsgroups

Seems a good solution.I found that disabling ghost software and altering my
firewall settings cured the problem.Microsoft needs full access to your
    computer.
Microsofts' solution of the doing a clean install seems on the face of it
    rather stupid.

Thanks so much. I worked on this problem since last night and your fix
works. Of course, some people have to bit a little tech savvy to
understand the dos commands, but it works. My only suggestion is that
when you get to a dos prompt, type c:\ to get to the root where
psexec.exe is located. Also, only choose the psexec.exe file when you
unzip the program because it has many many files. The others are not
    needed.

If it wasn't for you, I would be here for days...thanks again.

If redirecting is disabled in your IE or by a "security software"
running in the background, here you go:
    http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...4/WGADiag2.exe

Download and save the tool, quit your browser, execute the tool and
try to access Windows Update via IE again afterwards.

    Bye,

The link below worked for me also(xp home edition). I no longer get the
"failed to install" message, but there are apparently no updates for me to
download. The last download I have were on 2/16/06 (6 of them... 2 media
player, 3 security updates, 1 malicious software tool). Have there been any
updates for XP since then that anyone is aware of?

I don't usually have the need to use the message board, and am somewhat of a
novice at it. I hope I'm posting to the right place.

Thanks to all who post here. There are many knowledgable folks out there
who are saavy enough to know how to fix problems, but more importantly, share
them with others who are not as fortunate. I hope I can return the favor
    someday.
