Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)

    Hi All

This update is failing to install everytime i run it, and then it tells me
to "check your update history" for details but it doesn't appear in there! I
have been away on holiday for 2 weeks and need to get some updates down.

    Regards for any help

Windows keeps asking for "Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool
(KB892130)" when I check for updates.
When I download it, the update installs, then when complete the message
    reads "installation failed".
Any cures for this, or is it supposed to do this?

The WGA diagnostic tool has been updated to correct this problem seen by some
customers. Please download and execute it from:

    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

After running the tool, please return to Windows Update and try it again.

I tried everything myself, then I found this post and I click on the update
supplied here and now when I go back to windows update, it runs and says
    there is no critcal updatws.

I guess I should have mentioned that I read this solution in other threads
and tried it. The site just tells me that my Windows is genuine, not how to
    deal with the failed install.

If I am confirmed "Genuine" do I need to worry about the install?

RE: Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)

Microsoft Solution provided by another User:

If the WGA issue occurred when the Windows system has been activated, it was
    likely caused by one of
    the following factors:

    1. A security program running background prevents the validation tool from
    running properly.
    2. The WGA engine was not installed or running properly.

We can take the following steps and see if the issue can be resolved.

Step 1: Disable the security programs temporarily
    ==========================
The following programs can prevent the validation tool from running
    properly. I suggest we disable
them temporarily to test the issue:

    Norton Security programs
    Panda Antivirus programs
    Web Accelarator programs
    Anti-Spyware programs

If any of the above programs cause the issue, please check if it can be
    re-configured to accept the
WGA ActiveX control. Otherwise, please temporarily disabled to enable the
    WGA validation tool.
However, please re-enable the application after we complete the
    troubleshooting steps.

Step 2: Install the WGA engine manually
    ==========================
The WGA engine may have been already installed but is not working properly.
    We can use the following
steps to reinstall it. This will ensure the engine files be copied and
    registered properly.

    1. Download the ActiveX cab file from the following link and then save it to
    the Desktop.
    http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...eckControl.cab

Open the downloaded cab file and we will find the following three files:

    GWFSPIDGen.dll
    LegitCheckControl.dll
    LegitCheckControl.inf

    2. Click "Start", click "Run", type: "%windir%\system32" (without
    quotations) and press Enter. Copy
the GWFSPIDGen.dll and LegitCheckControl.dll files into the opened system32
    folder.

    3. Click "Start", click "Run", type: "REGSVR32 LegitCheckControl.dll"
    (without the quotations) and
press Enter. We will see a popup message state this process succeeded.

    4. Click "Start", click "Run", type: "inf" (without quotations) and press
    Enter. Copy the
LegitCheckControl.inf file into the opened inf folder.

    5. Right click on the copied LegitCheckControl.inf file in the inf folder,
    and then choose Install.
The WGA engine will be installed automatically.

After we finish the above steps, please restart the computer and try to
    validate the Windows again.

RE: Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)

    Hi

Well I have basically the same problem. After validating my copy of XP some
months ago Update now tells me I need the latest WGA and downloads it but
refuses to install it. So I followed your solution which seemed to work fine,
(install successful)until I retried Update again and it demanded to update
the WGA and then refused to install it (again).

    Since I can't update windows til it's installed I'm a little annoyed!

Iv'e tried combinations of Shaun's solution and the various other tips I
found in the forum, (disabling the plug in before I install manually etc.)

Anyone got any other ideas? Or do I just accept defeat?

Re: Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)

    Thanks Carey

I tried this and it validates my copy fine, but update still wants to
download and install the WGA that won't install and so I still can't get past
Go to collect the latest updates.

    WGA Diagnostic Data (1.5.0514.0):

Allow scripting of Internet Explorer Webbrowser control: Allowed

Script ActiveX controls marked as safe for scripting: Allowed

I seem to remember that when I initially ran the WGA some months ago I was
warned that there was a problem with the way my OEM (Acer) had set up the
laptop and while this was "ok at this point in time it may cause problems in
    the future".

I guess we reached that point. The thing that p*sses me off is that I have a
validated version of Windows I can't update and reinstalling won't solve the
problem because on this machine they provide a Ghost image of the original
disk. So I'd be back to square one.

If I can't update the OS to patch the never ending stream of security
problems I may have to look at moving to a different OS on this machine.

I got this info from another post and it finally worked for me too!!!
    Thanks everyone......hjparker

"I, like a lot of people with genuine copies of windows, have experienced

problems with installing KB892130. I've been in and out of a lot of posts on

the subject and tried various offered solutions which have (and have not)

worked for some people. After numerous variations, the following has worked

and I'm now able to run the update service as it was intended.

    Download psexec.exe from:-

    http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/PsExec.html

and put the file in root directory (C:\)

Download the WGA update executable from:-

    http://www.download.windowsupdate.co...82dcea49a0.exe

    and install in C:\temp.

Rename the file in C:\temp to WGA.exe (original file toooooo long)

    At DOS command line type:-

    psexec -i -s c:\temp\WGA.exe

The above tested and works - for me at least - Hope it works for others

Many thanks for all the inputs that got me to this position - there are too

many to mention by name - I just grateful to the newsgroups"

Re: Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)

    Hi

    Yes this worked for me!

I now get past the WGA update. Yippee!!

And I can download all those updates I've missed.

    But now they don't install.

So I guess I'll have to try re-registering all those dll's I've already
re-registered in the hope that I find a way around this crap update system.

The Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130) update failed to
install after downloading. The system froze, I was forced to progman out.
Even after ending the update task in progman, when trying to log off I
recieved a message that the install was still running. I gave it more time,
but still had to cancel out to log off.

Now my update history has a red X and yellow question mark that says the
    installation error is 0x800706BE.

Solving this whole issue may not even be necessary, as I was simply trying
to update XP before upgrading to Vista - can anybody speak to that?

From the problem description, I understand that Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130) failed to be downloaded. If I have misunderstood your concern, feel free to let me know.

I understand the inconvenience you have experienced. Please be assured that I will do my best to help you.

NOTE: Some third party programs can affect the Windows Update service. If you are running any third party applications such as Spyblocker, Internet or Web accelerators (programs designed to boost the speed of the Internet connection), security or anti-virus programs (Norton, McAfee, etc.), I recommend we temporarily disable or shut them down and then try accessing the Windows Update site later.
