| Windows Update Install Hangs on "Initializing installation..."
I have tried a number of the things that seem to be related to Windows Update issues on this site and still had no joy. Problem initially seen with Automatic Updates on, but did not install on shutdown, despite leaving machine on for several hours! Just stayed on "Installing 1 of 3..." Have since tried more manual control, even with firewalls/spyware checkers off, etc, but despite seemingly successful download, just get stuck on "Initializing installation..." in status window with absolutely nothing in the progress bar. Please help - it's driving me nuts! Thanks in anticipation of some kind assistance! |

Hi Daz, What operating system are you using? A look at the contents of the WindowsUpdate.log file might display an error message that would assist in helping you find a resolution to the problem. When you get a chance, visit the Microsoft Update (or Windows Update) site, taking note of the date and time that you accessed the site, and select one update to download/install. When the install fails to get past the "Initializing installation..." stage, exit the Update site and then locate the WindowsUpdate.log file (should be in C:\Windows folder or C:\WINNT folder if you are using Windows 2000). Copy the entries near the bottom of that file that occur for the date and time that you last attempted an update, then paste that into a reply here. Daz, Open the WindowsUpdate.log located in the WINDOWS directory. Scroll down towards the bottom and see if you can locate an error code associated with the failed installations. Post back with the section of log that contains the code(s). Or, you can visit the Troubleshooter from the Windows Update site by clicking the Get help and support link in the left frame, then click the Try solving your problem with the Troubleshooter link in the right frame. Input the error code into the " Type keywords here " window and then click the Search button. Try the suggested Resolutions for the specific error code. Hi Patti Thanks very much for responding. I am running XP (SP2) Unfortunately there does not seem to be anything as useful as an error message in the log file. Hi Daz, Busy time of year for me, and this is the first that I've been at my computer since the 23rd. Seems there's too much to do and too little time to do it in. You're right, there's not much to go on from that last part of your WindowsUpdate.log file. I was hoping for a useful error code :-( I did some scouting around for mention of a similar problem and found this at the Dell forum. Hopefully something within that thread will be useful for you: http://forums.us.dell.com/supportfor...essage.id=4470 Regards, -- Patti MacLeod Microsoft MVP - Windows Shell/User "Daz" <Daz@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:A3DD5F30-8E79-4433-86E7-6C9DEE44DEC0@microsoft.com... > Hi Patti > > Thanks very much for responding. > > I am running XP (SP2) > > Unfortunately there does not seem to be anything as useful as an error > message in the log file. Thanks Patti Sorry for the delay - been indulging in "Christmas Spirit"! The posting by "VBdotNet" (12-20-2004 10:56 AM) on the Dell forum seems to have done the trick. It seems there was a conflict between Norton and IIS. Many thanks for all your help - keep up the good work! Best wishes for a great 2006.
