    Error 0x800704dd

I am currently unable to download my Windows Update updates on a Windows 2000
SP4 systen, and after trying quite a few things mentioned in this board, I am
now stuck with a 0x800704dd error.

I've tried the regsvr32 trick with the wu*.dll files (yes, one at a time),
verified that BITS is up and running, checked every registry entry I could
    imagine (Noteably HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows
NT/Winlogin/Notify), and tried just about everything I could think of. Oddly
enough, I was able to download the upgrade from Windows/Office update to
Microsoft Update, but it won't work either (this log is from Microsoft
    Update).

I am validated, since I was able to download Microsoft Anti-Spyware without
    a problem.

Another (possibly related) item I just noticed... On the Microsoft Update
page, there is a link labeled "Find Hardware SUpport" that I haven't seen on
any other system, and it links to goatce.ca (non-functional site with a name
far too similar to the infamous .cx site). Did a spyware (Ad-Aware, Spybot,
Microsoft Antispyware) and a virus scan (Mcafee), and aside from the usual
tracking cookies, the system was clean.

    Log file follows:
*********** DnldMgr: New download job [UpdateId =

The only other info I have is that it means - Error_Not_Logged_On to network

Can you manually download the updates and install them?

You can download them from the Catalog and save to be installed later.

Click Add button for each update you want to download. Once you have what you want,
Click the “Go To Download Basket” link. Type in or browse to the location where you
want the updates saved to and then Click the “Download Now” button.
Once downloaded, you can then burn them to CD.

    Re: Error 0x800704dd

I had this problem for the past 2 weeks trying to fix it, tried every difficult suggestion I found to no avail. Then today, I fixed it easy as pie and can't believe Microsoft or no one has found the easy solution. I went back where I'd been directed before in the registry..

Run Regedit, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\

    1st: I renamed the Notify_Disabled to Notify

    2nd: I renamed the Notify to Notify_Disabled

Rebooted and windows update is back!!

I did have to first ad an X to the notify or when you change the Notify_Disabled to Notify it will say it already exist.

I could not believe how easy the fix turned out to be.
    Now everything is running smoothly!

Great, Sugarberries ! Tried for a couple of days to get that damned Update working, never thinking it could be such a stupid 'boolean' fault. Worked out fine !
