Automatic Updates KB957835 and KB951535 failed to install

I recently tried installing a couple of Automatic Updates, Update for
Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB957832) and Security
Update for Microsoft Office 2003 (KB951535). I have my system set to notify
me when updates are available. I downloaded the updates and then installed
them. The installation initialized ok but both updates failed to install. I
keep getting the message that updates are ready for my computer and when I go
to download the updates it is the same 2 updates. When I download them again
the download process is very quick so I am assuming they are already on my
computer and my system keeps trying to install the same original downloads
which must be corrupted somehow. How can I delete these files and try again
or is there another way to install these updates. This is the first time I
have any problems installing automatic updates. I am running XP Pro SP3.

I have found a solution to this problem.

    1. Go to Control Panel
    2. Open Administrative Services
    3. Open Event Viewer
    4. Open Application, look for MSIInstaller error. Check to see if the PA561401.cab is missing and preventing the updates from installing. In my case this was the problem.
    5. I downloaded the cab from the internet and placed it in the C:\MSOCache\All Users directory.
    6. The updates installed correctly.

Re: Automatic Updates KB957835 and KB951535 failed to install

I was also having this issue and followed 10 different methods to correct my problem with WU. Nothing was working for me so I tried to reload SP3 and that also failed with an I/O error. Earlier attempts had shown a problem with F: drive on some of the updates so I thought it might be a USB issue because my last drive is E: (DVD) on the laptop. The I/O error tipped me to check Administrator Tools / Disk Management and found a corrupted 1GB unregistered partition. Deleting this partition and running CHKDSK /F to correct the bad sectors found made it possible to use Automatic Updates again and all 11 updates loaded with no errors. This is a long winded way of saying “Check the obvious”. My thinking is that just having bad HD sectors could also cause this type of issue.
