| [Error number: 0x8DDD0007] - Unable to download Windows updates
In August, Auto Updates pulled down critical updates from the Microsoft site that I eventually installed on my XP Pro SP2 laptop (Dell Latitude D800). Since then, I have been unable to download updates through Auto Updates or the Windows Update site. Now when Auto Updates is enabled on my machine (and since I've installed these critical updates), I'm continuously propmpted to restart my machine so that the updates can finish installing. The critical updates that installed on my machine "broke" something that has rendered Auto Updates and the Windows Update site useless on my laptop. To band aid the problem, I've simply disabled Automatic Updates. For Auto Updates continued to prompt me to restart my computer every 5-10 mins. (After the initial download and after being prompted the fourth time, I disabled AU). When I try to download updates through Windows Update web site, I get the following error "[Error number: 0x8DDD0007] You need to restart your computer to finish installing a program or updates. You cannot view or get other updates from the site until you restart. " I have searched the Internet and MS web site concerning this error number. The only thing that MS has had to say about this error number was from a user in this forum. The solution was to remove a Registry Key called "RebootRequired" located under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\AutoUpdate Other websites have noted to delete the RebootRequired key in order to resolve this issue. In my case, I have deleted the key, only for it to be regenerated by a service upon initial computer startup. Users have stated in other forums that once this key is deleted, they are able to access the Windows Update site and download updates. What I have done so far is the following that doesn't seem to help: *System Restore *Reinstall version 6 of Windows update (renamed wuauclt.exe and wuweb.dll). After renaming these files, I was able to connect to WU, installed the latest version, but still received Error number: 0x8DDD0007 after successful install. *Renamed WindowsUpdate key under the above mentioned HKLM path (after exporting first of course) *Virus Scan (clean) *Spyware Scan (clean) *Deleted contents of C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution If anyone can help me with this, I would be very grateful. I'm trying to prevent reinstalling Windows on my machine in order to get WU/AU working properly. I imagine there is a file or registry that is corrupted somewhere. Thank you in advance for assistance. |

Go into services.msc and stop both AU and BITS services. 3. Now Disable both of those services. Apply / ok and exit services.msc 4. Delete entire contents of c:\windows\softwaredistribution folder 5. Turn Automatic updates back on set to Automatic via control panel. (this will automatically set the AU service to automatic, and the BITS to manual) Downloads should come down as the service will be restarted. Let me know if this works. |

| Re: [Error number: 0x8DDD0007] - Unable to download Windows update
Thank you for the reply I tried the outline steps below. Went to Windows Update web site and still receive [Error number: 0x8DDD0007]. Also, Automatic Updates is enalbed and it prompts me to restart my computer for the updates to take effect. | Re: [Error number: 0x8DDD0007] - Unable to download Windows update
0x8DDD0007 ErrorRebootRequired Reboot reference: http://www.talkaboutsoftware.com/gro...es/115924.html Reboot required message is generated:- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\AutoUpdate\RebootRequired If the key exists the message is generated by v5 update and it fails to work further causing [Error number: 0x8DDD0007]. The solution is to remove the key so there would be only HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\AutoUpdate without the RebootRequired entry.
