    Windows Installer 3.1 (v2) [kb893803]

    I tried to download/install Windows Installer 3.1 (v2) [kb893803] as the
update notification told me. No success. I downloaded
WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe to perform a local install; ended up
    with 3 error messages:
1: The system cannot find the file specified. 2: KB893803v2 installation did
not complete. Select 'OK' to undo the changes that have been made. 3:
KB893803v2 installation did not complete. Windows Installer has been
partially updated and may not work properly.
    Then (without notification) system reboot.

    My msi.dll is 3.1.4000.1823.

I'm having the same issue and I did a little clicking of links and found my
error code to be 8020000E however, whenever I run a search on their site(MS)
I get nothing. (This is typical btw, I always wind up having to refer to some
    other source to fix it.)

    Re: Windows Installer 3.1 (v2) [kb893803]

Is any version of the Windows Installer listed in Add/Remove Programs in
the Control Panel ? Was the installed antivirus program running during
the attempted install and, if it was, which one is it ?

Could you please try this ? : Show hidden files, folders, and system files
    http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html
Right click a blank area on the Desktop, select New, Folder. Name it
Install. Now navigate to the WINDOWS\Installer folder. On the Menu bar
click Edit, Select All. Left click and hold the click on one of the
objects in the right frame and drag them to the Install folder. Let go
of the mouse to drop the files.

Now trying running WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe. Whether it
installs successfully or not, move the files back to their original
location afterwards. Delete the empty Install folder on the Desktop.

    Re: Windows Installer 3.1 (v2) [kb893803]

    CP Add/Remove; listed "Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803)"
Firewall; ZA Pro 5.5.094 was running. The problem seems to be caused by
ProcessGuard; I permitted the Windows Installer to start, but I didn't notice
the PG was blocking installation of drivers/services. I tried to allow
"driver/services" and then "Learning mode" without success; the problem seems
to be that the installer is unpacked to a new random folder at each start-up.

I disabled PG protection and the installation of Windows Installer 3.1 (v2)
was completed successfully. I now have msi.dll v3.1.4000.2435 in the System32
    folder.

    (I didn't understand why I should move WINDOWS\Installer to Desktop\ÃŒnstall;
it caused Kaspersky AV to work hard on reboot (real-time protection enabled).
The folder is now moved back.)

    Thanks for your help.

    MowGreen,
Tried this and it did properly install the update, but I couldn't load
Windows after. I restored to an earlier point. Am I supposed to replace the
files after restart or before? My error's a bit different. It saysit can't
    access/no permission for files, including:
    C:\WINDOWS\$MSI31Uninstall_KB893803v2$.
The error in the WindowsUpdate log is: 0x8024000b

    Ah ha ... >> The problem seems to be caused by ProcessGuard;

Thanks for the information. Kapersky was slow to load because it was
looking for the files in their original location. It adds an Alternate
Data Stream to them. I wasn't aware that it was installed.
The reason I requested you move the files out of the Installer folder is
that sometimes they become corrupted and interfere with newer installs
or the Installer folder becomes filled up.
Actually, they are no longer needed after the install of software.

Glad to see that that the Installer was installed, though. Nice work !

    W S,

It installed and then would not reboot ? Do the same as before and then
move the files back before rebooting.
Just searched this newsgroup and the only post related to this error
code, 0x8024000b, was posted by you today.
Did you see the post by jan07 ? A 3rd party software that guards system
processes is what prevented the install of Windows Installer.

    Re: Windows Installer 3.1 (v2) [kb893803]

Actually, I did move the files back before rebooting, and then it wouldn't
load windows. Should I try rebooting first? I'm not running ProcessGuard.
And as I said, my error message was a bit different, about permission, not
    file not found.
    Thanks,
    W.

    KB893803v2 Setup Error
KB893803v2 Setup could not backup registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\MSI31-RC1
to file C:\WINDOWS\$MS131Uninstall_KB893803v2$\reg00011. 5: Access is denied.

    KB893803v2 Setup Error
KB893803v2 Setup could not backup registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\KB893803
to file C:\WINDOWS\$MS131Uninstall_KB893803v2$\reg00012. 5: Access is denied.

The problem is that those registry keys aren't even openable -- they're in the registry, but I get "Cannot open [MSI30-Beta2]: Error while opening key. I'm logged in as Administrator, and I've set parent permissions properly. I can't even view permissions for those keys.

    Thanks,

    Will Stewart

    Re: Windows Installer 3.1 (v2) [kb893803]

For what it's worth, after a prodigious amount of Googling I followed the
    procedure from this site:

    http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm

This is exactly what worked for me:

-Rename the Catroot2 folder, and then try to install the program again.
To rename the Catroot2 folder, follow these steps:
-Click Start, and then click Run.
-In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
-At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER
    after each line:
    net stop cryptsvc
    ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 catroot2old
    net start cryptsvc
    exit
-Important: Do not rename the Catroot folder. The Catroot2 folder is
automatically recreated by Windows, but the Catroot folder is not recreated
    if it is renamed.

The only odd thing is I now have nothing under "View Installation
History" -- not even the KB893803 I installed. It is listed in Add/Remove
Programs, though. Don't know if that matters...

Thanks for everyone's help, hope it works for you all.

Also, this tool is helpful if you don't have installation history, or you
need to make sure the hotfixes are properly installed:

    Re: Windows Installer 3.1 (v2) [kb893803]

Nice work, W S. Apparently corruption in the Catroot2 folder is what
caused the Access is denied error when the update was attempting to
backup the uninstall registry key. Can't explain the nothing showing for
the " View Installation History " though. I find no files on my system
which would have it in the Catroot2 folder.
Check in the SoftwareDistribution folder for a ReportingEvents.log.
