    RE: Error number: 0x8007043C

I discovered I also had this problem within 1/2hr. of your post. I searched
this forum back into April and found no other references to 0x8007043C. Maybe
it is a new trojan just released today? Here is some more background on my
experience, tell me if this sounds familiar: I formatted a new HDD and
installed my old Windows XP disk ("SP0?"). I went to Windows Update to start
the update process. 66 updates had to install (30 min on cable modem) before
I would be able to install SP2. At the end of this first phase there was the
black Windows XP screen and a message, "Please Wait". Keyboard and mouse were
responsive but this remained unchanged for about an hour so I reset. Now when
booting normally I get to the black WinXP screen and then all keyboard lights
come on for 1/2sec. Then they all go black. Then the WinXP image disappears
and the monitor blinks due to loss of signal. HDD light blinks furiously, it
seems busy. I can reboot in safe mode w/networking but at Windows Update I
get 0x8007043C after selecting Express or Custom.

Do you have a file in your root C: directory called "pagefile.sys" that is
several Gb in size? I do and I can't delete it, it's "in use by another
    person or program".

Maybe a vulnerability in SP0 or SP1 has been comprimised, preventing us from
updating to SP2? This sucx, like a chicken & egg thing. How do I get an
updated (secure) OS if the only way is to expose myself on the www while
updating with an insecure OS? I was hoping it was just a hardware problem but
I didn't have the problem before connecting to the internet for a Windows
    Update.

One way you could solve the problem of how to update an insecure OS version
when one has to connect to the internet is to slipstream SP1 then SP2
updates. Do a search on this group for instructions. You would then end up
with a CD that has an updated OS. I am not certain what to do about the
other dribbling updates - doesn't the SP usually incorporate all updates up
to the SP date (unless documented otherwise)?

this error code and i cant find what it means anywhere else..can you help??

I agree, I accessed my internet thru Win safe mode because I did not have any
other choice. I cannot access my internet (DSL) and update; it works just
fine in safe mode. I have Norton antivarius and just updated it. I need help
badly?Anyone out there who can help? Thanks so much.

    Hello,
It appears that the IS a new variant of a Sasser worm...
I have been cleaning both the sasser and Baegle variants.

The PC i am working on seems to be hijacked on the normal windows desktop.
Progams appear to boot then dissapear.

Only method to access the internet is to use SAFE MODE.
when trying to run update, i get error codes as above?
    "Error number: 0x8007043C"

is there any way to download the SP2 from an FTP?

Open a new command prompt and execute the following commands:

Can someone help me to resolve this error??? This results from attempting to
scan my PC for downloads, but the scan fails and MY PC WILL NOT WORK!!! I
have to be in safe mode just to get to this site to post my problem.

TaurArian, repeating your response that should be meant to help; though
probably defines ostensibly what the error code means, but many of the people
only have SAFEBOOT available for internet connections. I have the same
problem, and I believe it's caused by a powerful worm, because update is only
one thing inaccessible to me. I get errors that Admin policy prohibits
downloading certain programs (oddly only things that would help me fix the
problem); links in pages sometimes start to open once after trying longtime,
then when clicked again, nothing happens. Since I can only control my
computer in Safe Mode, but sometimes can squeak through the download of
programs, what program/s should I try to obtain to try to fix this, please?
    Thanks,

TaurArian, I meant to say: your definition is no doubt right, but seems not
to be helping a lot. Perhaps the Update error is really for most of us just
another symptom of something sinister - like a worm or trojan, etc. BTW I'm
    running XP on Vaio Laptop.

Hal, this is a Windows Update Newsgroup. Windows Update cannot be ran in safemode and
nothing I say or do will change that.

If safe mode is the only option available to a person, then obviously there is a problem
which needs to be fixed before that person can run windows updates.

If the problem is related to a virus or something then there are Newsgroups available to
    assist in that area -

Security - Viruses OE client -
    news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...security.virus
    orWeb client -
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/com...security.virus
If the safeboot option is only available and not due to a security problem then perhaps
    the XP General Newsgroup -

    I have the same problem.
I downloaded Service pack 3, which required the PC to restart after installation. On restart Windows did not start successfully and I got a black screen apologizing for the inconvenience and giving me the option to start in safe mode, or start normally or go back to the last setting that worked.

Neither start normally nor go back worked, but I could start in safe mode with network.

I tried to update Windows and got this error message 0x8007043C.

I'm not technical so any step by step suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

    Re: Error number: 0x8007043C

That's funny ya'll are getting this error 0x8007043C on XP. I'm getting the error within Security essentials on Win7. Unlike the rest of you so far I can update normally, but security essentials will not let me open it in normal mode. I can open security essentials in safe mode but in trying to update the definitions, it is there I get that error and stating to make sure I am connected to the internet. And no amount of starting or stopping the service helps me. So if anyone knows what's going on with Security Essentials please let me know.
