Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (KB970892) is not updating. Continues to come up as "failed"? Please help same thing here. and the yellow shield with the "!" keeps coming back.

The above update has failed; does anyone know either how to resolve this issue or disable the update requirement

RE: Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (KB970892)

    Is the server running?

I have the "SQLEXPRESS" version installed (it got installed with Visual Studio), but don't usually have the service running unless I'm actively working on a related project. I had the update fail to install too until I remembered to start the server, after which the update worked fine. In my case, the System event log entry said "Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (KB970892)."

I'm getting same thing in Windows Vista Ultimate, error code I'm getting is 7358 "Windows Update encountered an unknown error". Also my remote desktop access stopped working a couple of updates ago.

Is the SQL Server service actually running? The update will fail if it's not, with something like this in the System event log: Windows Update Agent Event_ID 20. Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (KB970892).

    The answer is:

Your Microsoft SQL Server folder is likely compressed to save hard drive space. Go to your C: Drive > Then to Programs. It is likely that all of your folders are blue, rather than black meaning they are compressed. Updates to the Microsoft SQL Server folder will not load in compressed folders. Right click on the Microsoft SQL Server folder and go to properties. Click on Advanced. Uncheck the third box that says: "Compress contents to save disk space." Apply this setting to the folder, subfolders and files (second radio button). Apply this setting, and go back to your Desktop. Now the update will load perfectly. This doesn't seem to apply to me, as my folder is not compressed, just checked. Is the color of the folder name blue uner C:/Programs? If so, uncheck the box

RE: Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (KB970892)

I only have one other idea. Sometimes the update loads partially. Go to Control Panel....Add/Remove Programs and Check Show Updates. Scroll down to Microsoft SQL Server 2005. Is the update KB970892 listed underneath? If so, uninstall it from the Add/Remove programs and then reinstall it. I hope this helps. Sorry the other fix did not work for you.

I am having the same issue. I can't get this update to install. I tried both of the fixes listed here and I still get an error code 64C. No idea what this means, but the update will not install.

RE: Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (KB970892)

Thanks for your help Dr. Mike. No it didn't partially install, already had a look for that. Anyway SQL isn't needed on this PC so I just uninstalled it all, problem solved.

I do not understand. My vaio is on vista. My errors are 646 & 643; KB973709, KB972581 & KB974234 & microsoft.netframework1.1servcepack1 ( I have serv.pk 2). I have read most of these messages. I am not computer saavy at all. So most of what you guys are talking about, I don't understand. Can anyone, help in plain language how to resolve this update issue? I don't know if it is messing up my computer or not. Sorry this is so long.

Someone more with the same problem. KB970892 failed with error code 0x80070643. Running sql desktop engine sp3 on windows xp. After uninstalling and re-installting the sql server the problem was gone - but it returned after the next windows update. Folder compression is disabled. What else could cause this error?

    For a previous service pack

<title>Error message when you try to install a SQL Server 2005 service pack or a SQL Server 2005 hotfix package: "Error 29528.
The setup has encountered an unexpected error while Setting Internal Properties"</title> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925976

(Microsoft Search for 0x7358 29528 SQL) BTW you might find more informed help from a newsgroup which specializes in SQL setup.

To resolve this issue, do the following:
    1. Go to Run, type regedit, and click ok, or press Enter.
    2. Back up your registry, if you don't know how to do this, google it...
    3. In Regedit, go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\Setup]
[Note that if you have multiple instances of MSSQL installed, the reg key might be different for you]
    4. find the Resume REG_DWORD, and change its decimal value from 1, to 0.
    5. install the update, and restart the machine.
If you don't want to install this update using the automatic update (WUAUCLT), you can download the hotfix directly from microsoft, just google
"download KB970892 ". you will still need to manually change the registry "Resume" value, or else the hotfix will fail to install...
