    8E5E03FB Error with Update KB961260

    Hi,

I am getting error 8E5E03FB when I try to install KB961260 using windows
    update. System Info as follows:-

    Vista Home SP1
    Intel Core2 Quad CPU
    IE7 7.0.6001.18000

I have got the same error on a few other (less important) updates so there
looks to be a recurring problem. Please can someone help get to the bottom of
    this.

    Thanks:-)

Usually an error code is useless without its context.
So search any files that the update created or modified
    for that.

    Couldn't find any changed files.

Am completely fed up with IE now. Firefox, Safaria and Chrome all seem
better bets than IE now so I will take the easy way out of this IE update
    problem and stop using it..

That may be a deficiency of the tools you are using
or a deficiency in the way you are using them. ; )

At a minimum you could open a cmd window and enter

    dir/a/s %SystemDrive%\ | find "2009-02-12" | sort >chgs.txt

(e.g. if you did it today and if your system date format is set to the ISO standard)

Unfortunately that would only give you some filenames which changed
without their paths but at least it would show you a list of files which
changed during the minute that you were running the update. Then that
would be proof to you that you might be able to find the same filename
using another tool which would let you see its path. But if those tools
were still deficient you could issue individual dir commands for each one
that you were suspecting might have been produced by the update.
For an obvious example to test that idea I tried this and it worked:

    dir/a/s %SystemDrive%\windowsupdate.log

BTW apparently I made the same suggestion to someone else about
    this last year...

    http://www.mcse.ms/archive/index.php/t-2807835.html

    (Live Search for
    (8E5E03FB OR 0x8E5E03FB)
    )

So until someone finds some context for their error code
I doubt this problem symptom will have a helpful explanation
    let alone a resolution.

Re: 8E5E03FB Error with Update KB961260

Was Vista SP1 offered by Windows Update or did you choose to install it
    manually?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
    What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

    You could...

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
    https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB961260).

LOOK! => If your problem relates to a Cumulative Security Update for IE,
call the above number and ask to be transferred to the "Consumer IE queue"
    (which is 47830).

    Support for Windows Update:
    http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
    site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
    your usual support contacts.

PS: I wouldn't be surprised if you're seeing the affects of a hijackware
    infection.

To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you include all of previous
message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup. Thank you.

    1. Download the Norton Removal Tool, saving it to your desktop:
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039

    2. Right-click on the saved file and select "Run as Administrator." Follow
    all prompts.

    3. Reboot twice.

If still no joy, open a free support incident.

Done and still get exactly the same errors.

I have been trying Mozilla Firefox and Apple Safari for the past day and
they work like a joy; Safari is much faster than IE too.

Sorry but I haven't got time to waste debugging IE. If MS can't get their
act together and produce reliable and secure applications they are in
    trouble..

Is this the only diagnostic file the update created or changed?
E.g. I suspect that you could have more hits in CBS.log,
perhaps with more specific clues in it.

In any case, I doubt there is sufficient info here to help identify
    what is wrong.

However, the fact that your snippet starts out with a previous error
(which shows that there may have been a file missing) might be a better
tack to pursue than trying to assign a meaning to the code being reported.

    Good luck

If your problems are due to an infection, *Windows* is what's infected, not
IE, so opting to use another browser isn't going to correct this and other
issues, and your computer is not safe to be connected to the internet or any
    networks.
