Failed to install updates: KB898461 & KB892130

When i go onto windows update website and click on either custom or express
buttons to get updates it says there are two updates to install (Update for
Windows XP (KB898461) and Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool
(KB892130)). When i try and download them it fails to install them. When i
look on the update history i get the error code: 0x80070057. The automatic
update must also have been trying to install them and failing as there are a
total of 40 install failures recorded from these two updates, all with the
same error code. I tried to install the first manually but it wouldn't
install. Not sure what else to try.

Can't find anything at all useful on the knowledge base. Any help would be
much apreciated.

I too have been having this problem for the past couple of months. Several
Months ago I had this very problem with Office Updates. I was able to finally
fix it with a small script program that I got here in the Newsgroups as
Microsoft Tech Support Had me doing all kinds of thing but to no avail. I
have no idea why this started happening again on Windows Update. This has had
some changes I know< but it now incorporates Office and Windows Update. My
Office Update Still Works.

I've no idea what causes it (i can't find much on the knowledge base), i've
installed lots of updates successfully - its just stopped working. I tried
enabling all the windows services and then doing it but that hasn't helped.
