| C-Media AC97 Audio Device Driver download from windows updates.
Found a driver update at MS update site "C Media Electronics Incorporation - Sound - C-Media AC97 Audio Device ". Prior to installing this update sound was fine, after no sound and device manager states that driver fails to start. This is a new system with a clean install of mfg supplied drivers as well as a clean install of O/S (MS Win XP Pro SP2). Done the driver rollback and sound functionallity was restored. Would you all PLEASE fix your driver that you supply thru Windows update or remove it till then. I mean I don't mind the xtra business but this is getting old, fixing a customers computer that they update themselves thru your system and then bring it to me to fix due to a problem that you install. Thanks for the help with business but I don't need that kind of help. And sooner or later people will quit using your products after they get so pissed off about having to pay to get thier equipment fixed from updates that you are supplying. I mean FIX it or don't supply it when you find out there is a problem with it... :-{ As you obviously have according to the previous post at this board, or at least warn people prior to downloading and give them the nessary info to do the driver roll back Prior to the download. Have a nice day... |

I had the same problem with that driver update. Also had to do a roll back drivers. Prior to the update I had in Device Manager showing my sound as NVIDIA nForce. It is onboard sound on this MSI mother board. I have learned in the past taking drivers from MS Updates usually don't go well. I thought I would try this one even though it said it was C-Media. I thought maybe it would work since Updates scanned my system and thought it found a device for this. Well, now I do know I won't ever try drivers from MS Updates again. Will be sure to go to the Manufactures of the device for any updates. |

One wonders why MS keeps delevering these problem-causing drivers through WU - MS knows they are causing rampant trouble, why not remove them from WU? (I believe an MVP) said "Noone in their right mind would use driver from Windows Update"... makes you wonder about the mental state of those that continue to post them. |

Same C-Media code 10 error. How do I get the correct driver needed ? I read your rollback. Rollback to what and where do I get that driver. Thanks in advance for your help. |

| RE: C-Media AC97 Audio Device Driver download from windows updates
The ROLL BACK method is to go to your system properties and then device manager then the device driver and the properties for the driver then the driver tab and select rollback driver to a previous version. You do not say whether your sound was working properly prior to the update as well as to what operating system that you have. If your sound was working then the driver will be there to roll back to if not you should go to your motherboard mfg web site to get the latest driver for your onboard sound if its a stand alone card you should go to the mfg web site and search there. Of cource you could always Google search for C Media that will get lots of results. Can you be more specific about the system in question? |

Most of us figured out a looooong time ago not to install hardware drivers from Windows Update. I would suggest you advise your clients, customers, friends, colleagues, and whoever else the same idea: If it ain't broke, don't "fix" it. That is to say, hardware updates only be installed IF something is NOT working, and an engineer from that hardware vendor has recommended a specific update. |

And your a MS MVP? Thanks for your help with "Canoeone's" problem. No wonder MS has a bad name and sometimes gets a driver wrong. Are you the one that worked on the driver in question must be? Or as a MS MVP you would offer "Canoeone" a solution to his difficulty instead of the solution you did offer which was none. So much for your MVP ness helping a stranger out when he needed it. Is that all an MS MVP can do is nothing to aid in Canoeone's situation? |

I've got this same problem whereas my C-Media on the motherboard shows it is working fine in the device manager, but it isn't available as a choice to choose as a preferred audio device - Only Modem "0" Line Playback. It used to work fine...... I've tried uninstalling the device and reinstalling drivers downloaded from both C-Media and the motherbaord manufactuer. I even reinstalled Win2000. Nothing fixes it!! Any more ideas? |

As most a little more experienced users know you only updata a driver when the hardware is not functioning well and one should never take any drivers from MS update. If a driver is really needed because the hardware is not working well you shlould always take it from the manufcturers website, in this case Realtek. If it ain't broke: do NOT try to "FIX" it. |

Anyone know where I can find the damn driver without some software to scan my system? I too have the C-Media AC97 chipset and it sucks. I recall that I had a similar problem years ago, but this just beats the hell out of me. I just want a driver that I can have the computer find and install. Thanks to anyone who can help. |

this is the Windows Update Newsgroups (re: Microsoft) where we attempt to help users with issues regarding mystery operating systems. Perhaps you'll need to do some research: http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=e...ia+AC97+&meta= |
