the error code means, "invalid device name or path specified"

have you modified the location of "program files" folder?

No the program files are where they have always been:
    c:/program files
and the update facility worked under the old system and stopped working when
    they changed to this one

I once turned off the computer while it was shutting down and installing
these automated updates. Since then there must be some file fragment blocking
the way for a correct update. Does anybody know which file that could be or
where I can ask? I hope this information also helps everybody else who
    encountered this error number.

    RE: Error number: 0x8007007B

I wrote to MS helpdesk and recieved the following reply:

Thanks for contacting Microsoft online support. My name is Gary and I will
be dealing with you on this support issue. Please remove (make sure you
remove them totally and not just disable them) all anti virus software or
third party firewalls you may have (norton, zone alarm, mc afee etc). Also
open up internet exporer go to tools, internet options, security and enable
    the following services:

    - Download signed active x controls
    - Run active x controls and plug ins
    - Script active x controls marked for safe scripting
    - Active scripting

If this fails then please try the following suggestions.

    Suggestion 1
    ===========

Please try registering the following files by going to start, run and typing
    the following:

REGSVR32 SOFTPUB.DLL (Press enter after each one)
    REGSVR32 WINTRUST.DLL
    REGSVR32 INITPKI.DLL
    REGSVR32 wuapi.dll
    REGSVR32 wuaueng.dll
    REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL
    REGSVR32 atl.dll
    REGSVR32 wucltui.dll
    REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL
    REGSVR32 wups.dll
    REGSVR32 msxml.dll
    REGSVR32 msxml3.dll
    REGSVR32 msxml2.dll

Then try the update site again. If this doesnt work then go to the next
    suggestion.

    Suggestion 2
    ==========

    1. Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder:
    a) Click Start, Choose Run.
    b) In the Run box type "net stop wuauserv"(without the quotation marks) and
    click OK.
    c) Then again click on Start --> Run.
    d) In the Run box, type %windir% (exactly as written ) and then click OK.
    e) This will open the Windows folder or your system. Locate the folder named
    SoftwareDistribution
    f) Right click on this folder and then select Rename. Type the new name as
    OLDSoftwareDistribution
    g) Close this window.
    h) Again click on Start --> Run and type "net start wuauserv" (without the
quotation marks) and then press OK.
    i) Restart your computer.
    j) Test if you can install Windows Updates.

    Suggestion 3
    ============

    2. Rename the catoot2 folder:
    a) Click Start, and then click Run.
    b) In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
    c) At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after
    each line:
    net stop cryptsvc
    ren C:\windows\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
    net start cryptsvc
    d) Type exit to close the command prompt.
    e) Reboot your computer.
    f) Test if you can install the updates.

Not wanting to disable either antivirus or firewall it did not attempt that.
Solution 1: did not work because REGSVR32 msxml2.dll was missing.
Solution 2: worked fine and I can now update Win 2000
