    [Error number: 0x80070020]

While trying to run Windows update on XP SP2 I receive the above error number
and the text: "Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the
    requested page".

I have tried disabling my antivirus program as suggested but it makes no
difference. Anyone got any ideas how to sort the problem? Thanks.

What solved this error with my was disabling spybot-sd.

If this doesn't help try searching for it in here (windows update), this
error seems very common so many advices for it are available.

Hi Doreen, I also get 0x80070020 and have Spybot S&D. How do I go about
disabling Spybot S&D? Does that mean I have to uninstall it?

    Thanks,

    To Doreen and all.

I corrected the problem. It was the "Tea Timer" in Spybot S&D.
Bring up Spybot S&D and click on mode.....then select advanced mode....click
yes in the pop up box. Then click tools at lower left......then click
resident.....then uncheck the Resident "Tea Timer" box. X out and that
should do it and hopefully most will be able to get the Windows updates.

    Thanks,
    Jimmy

    RE: [Error number: 0x80070020]

If anyone out there has Spybot Search & Destroy and while trying to run
Windows update you receive the error number 0x80070020 and this message:

"Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the
    requested page".

I corrected the problem in my computer. It was the "Tea Timer" in Spybot S&D.

Bring up Spybot S&D and click on mode.....then select advanced mode....click

Then click tools at lower left....then click resident.....then uncheck the
    Resident "Tea Timer" box.

X out and that should do it and hopefully most will be able to get the
    Windows updates.

You can go back after updating and put "Tea Timer" back on by following the
above steps. You may have to do the same thing next time you update unless
Spybot S&D fixes the glitch in the meantime.

PS - "Tea Timer" ( if you have Spybot S&D) is an overall protection of
    settings on your computer.

Ah ha! that was a real head scratcher for a while! yes, this solved it. I
just disabled tea-timer for a while when doing updates, then its all ok.
Wonder if the people who wrote spybot will update the software to allow
    updates...hmmm

Thanks Jimmy, I'll see what happens. It must only be necessary when microsoft
make changes to the installer package or something like that then. Could this
be the first signs of dwindling support from microsoft in a bid to increase
    vista uptake I wonder. ;-)

    RE: [Error number: 0x80070020]

If anyone out there has Spybot Search & Destroy and while trying to run
Windows update you receive the error number 0x80070020 and this message:

"Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested
    page".

I corrected the problem in my computer. It was the "Tea Timer" in Spybot S&D.

Bring up Spybot S&D and click on mode.....then select advanced mode....click
yes in the pop up box. Then click tools at lower left....then click
resident.....then uncheck the Resident "Tea Timer" box.
X out and that should do it and hopefully most will be able to get the
    Windows updates.

You can go back after updating and put "Tea Timer" back on by following the
above steps. You may have to do the same thing next time you update unless
Spybot S&D fixes the glitch in the meantime.

Or a more simple way may be to right click on Spybot S&D in you task bar at
bottom of desktop and choose Resident in IE. From that menu uncheck "unblock
all bad pages silently" and also "Resident in IE " After you update you can
go back and put the above back on.

PS - "Tea Timer" ( if you have Spybot S&D) is an overall protection of
    settings on your computer.

    Hi all,

Iv'e seen the recommendations to disable tea timer but this permanently
disables spybot's real time protection ( until your remember turn it back
on). I prefer to temporararily close it, only for this session, so when I
restart my PC it will reactivate automatically.
How? Right click the spybot icon (on the start bar near the clock) and
    choose "Exit Spybot-S&D Resident".
    As simple as that.

By the way, spybot 1.5 beta (for vista) should be out soon. Hopefully this
    error woun't reocur...
