Error Code 0x80070001

I've been trying to run Windows Update, but three of the updates are refusing to install (KB837001, KB828741, KB835732). It keeps giving me Error 0x80070001: Incorrect function. What's going on?

RE: Error Code 0x80070001

What's even weirder is that the updates actually *are* listed in Add/Remove Programs, but that the Sasser Virus Removal Applet on Microsoft's support website is telling me it can't run because the update isn't installed... and I *need* to run that applet because I actually have the virus.

Nine of the fifteen "non-critical" updates I've tried to install are giving me the same problem.

<I>The following items failed to install. To try installing them again, click Review and install updates, and then click Install Now again.

Update for Windows Media Player 9 Series (KB837272)
Update for Windows XP Shop for Music Online Link (KB833998)
Update for Microsoft Windows XP (KB826942)
Recommended Update for Windows XP SP1 (KB822603)
Windows Error Reporting: Recommended Update (Windows XP)
820291: Recommended Update (Windows XP)
Recommended Update for Windows XP SP1 (817778)
Q322011: Recommended Update
Update for Windows XP Service Pack 1 (KB810243)</i>

Re: Error Code 0x80070001

Anna ,

Download Stinger from here :

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

• Remove the system from any network or internet connection.

To clean the worm off of your system you will need to end the process
first :

• Right click on the Task Bar. Open Task Manager

• End any process beginning with 4 or more numbers and “_up.exe” (for
example, 12345_up.exe)

• End any process starting with avserve (for example, avserve.exe,
avserve2.exe)

• End any process named skynetave.exe

• End any process named hkey.exe

• End any process named msiwin84.exe

• End any process named wmiprvsw.exe

NOTE: Do not end the process named wmiprvse.exe it is a legitimate
system process.

OR, boot the system to Safe Mode and run Stinger from there (A highly
recommended method).
Make sure the firewall is enabled before attempting to connect to the
internet again or the system will be reinfected prior to the
installation of the KB835732 update.
================================================================

For the 0x8007001 error, locate the "xpsp1hfm.exe" file located in the
c:\windows\system32 directory and rename it to xpsp1hfm.old . Do the
updates install ? If you'd like or need, I can send you the file to
replace the renamed one.

If not, download KB837001 from the links on this page
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms04-014.mspx

KB828741
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms04-012.mspx

KB835732
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms04-011.mspx

Save them to your Hard Drive. Close Internet Explorer.
Either temporarily disable your antivirus program and any script
blocking component of it prior to installing or boot to Safe Mode and
install from there. Do one update at a time with a reboot between each
installation.

Re: Error Code 0x80070001

The updates still won't install, even with the file renamed. I tried downloading them directly from the sites like you said, but at random the installation just disappears without giving me an error message

Incidentally, why can't I post to this newsgroup from my friend's computer? It keeps saying "service temporarily unavailable", and has been saying that for days now. Instead I have to connect this computer to the internet and risk it being reinfected...

There are better ways to do that than the way you appear to be doing it.

If you can use a real NNTP newsreader (e.g. Outlook Express)
you could use this link

news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof....windowsupdate

Alternatively, you could use the newer version of web interface
with this link

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...&lang=en&cr=US

(among others--that just happens to be one I have saved in Favorites.)

Also, don't overlook Google Groups as a source of information.

http://groups.google.com/

Either use the Advanced Groups Search link on that page or just
modify your search by appending each time

group:microsoft.*.windowsupdate

BTW if you find that your search is catching too many queries instead
of answers you can also try adding

author:MSFT OR MVP

Good luck

Anna,

Contact me at mowgreen@notmvps.org.not (hint : drop two words from
the URL ;). The system apparently needs xpsp1hfm.exe to successfully
install updates since the original file had become corrupted.
