Windows Updates - website has encountered a problem....?

Everytime I open Windows Updates, I receive a red dot with an X in it, and
this message: "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the
page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve
    the problem."
The options do not help....any ideas anyone?

Guessing as you have not provided any information at all. On the assumption
that you are using Windows XP (as Vista can't go to the website) -

Microsoft solution posted by another user:

This issue can be caused by some different factors. I suggest we first try
the following steps. Please test the issue after you perform each of the
    suggestions.
Suggestion 1: Re-register the relevant XML components.

    ===========================

This issue can occur when the XML component is not working properly. Let's
refer to the following steps to get this issue resolved:

    1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter.

    2. In the opened window, run the following command:

    regsvr32 Msxml3.dll
    regsvr32 Msxml2.dll
    regsvr32 Msxml.dll

    3. Please also install MSXML 3.0 SP5 from the following link:

Microsoft XML Parser (MSXML) 3.0 Service Pack 5 (SP5):
    http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...1d8/msxml3.msi

Suggestion 2: Clear the Windows Update temporary folder and reset Internet
    Explorer settings.

    ===========================

This error can occur if the temporary folder of Windows Update has been
corrupted. I suggest we delete this folder to test the issue:

    1. Click Start, Run, type: %windir%\system32 and press Enter.

    2. In the opened folder, find a folder named CatRoot2 and delete it.

Please also clear the Internet Explorer cache, and reset the Internet
    Explorer options:

    1. Click Start, Run, type: inetcpl.cpl and press Enter to open the Internet
    options window.

    2. Click "Delete Cookies" and select Yes to confirm.

    3. Click "Delete Files" and select Yes to confirm.

    4. Click Settings, click "View Objects". Delete all the objects in this
folder. If some objects cannot be deleted, please restart the computer and
    try again.

    5. Switch to the Security tab, select Internet and click "Default Level".

    6. Switch to the Privacy tab, and click "Default" button.

    7. Switch to the Advanced tab, click the "Restore Defaults" button and then
deselect the "Enable third-party browser extensions" option.

    8. Click OK.

Now reboot your system and test the Windows Update Site and see if the issue
is resolved and let me know the result.

If you are still encountering the above error on Windows Update Site, please
    try the next suggestion.

Suggestion 3: Re-register Windows Update components.

    ===========================

This issue may occur when three Windows Update components have not been
registered successfully. Let's refer to the steps below to re-register them:

    1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter.

    2. In the opened window, run the following commands:

    regsvr32 Jscript.dll
    regsvr32 wuapi.dll
    regsvr32 wuaueng.dll

Please check if you receive any error when trying to re-register these
components. If not, please try to visit the Windows Update site again.

RE: Windows Updates - website has encountered a problem....?

Today I have tried to get to Windows Update and Microsoft Update from two
WinXP (SP3) computers here, and both of them give the same error as
Quadomatic is getting (and Error number 0x80244022). Could this be a problem
    at Microsoft's end?

I have tried both Windows Update and Microsoft Update on two WinXP-SP3
computers here, and I get the same error on these as Quadomatic is getting.
    The error number is 0x80244022.

Could this be a problem at Microsoft's end?

I suspect is was a problem at their end, as the systems here are now
connecting successfully to check for updates. Quadomatic: is it working now
    for you?

    0x80244022 = SUS_E_PT_HTTP_STATUS_SERVICE_UNAVAIL

I am having the same issue with attempting updates. I went thru all the steps
in TaurArians response and no joy. I received the error 0x80070005 trying to
register the wuaueng.dll in the final step (I am using XP SP2).

To avoid confusion, please begin a new thread about your specific problems.
State your IE version and full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP2)
    in your first post.

Re: Windows Updates - website has encountered a problem....?

I recieve this message on a Windows 2K3 SE server with IE 6.0.3790.3959.
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.
When I try the steps listed by TaurArian I don't have to option to select the defaults when trying to clear the Internet Explorer cache. I did everything else but still have the same issue. Any other ideas?

Reinstalling Windows Media Player 11 fixed it for me.
This was on a PC that had had a virus infection, and then had needed a repair install to get going again.

What worked for me was running the Norton Removal Tool from Symantec.

Re: Windows Updates - website has encountered a problem....?

I applied solutions 1 thru 3. Rebooted PC. Then I went to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144 In the pop up window (Microsoft Fix it) Which states: "This troubleshooter: "Automatically diagnose and fix common problems with Windows Update" may automatically fix your problem.
This troubleshooter fixes many different problems. Learn more
    Find more automated solutions
By clicking Run now, you agree to the terms referenced in the Microsoft License Agreement" I clicked on "RUN NOW" and it repaired the windows update problem. Prior to doing steps 1 thru 3 the Microsoft Fix it "Automatically diagnose and fix common problems with Windows Update" did not work. This time it worked and Windows updates are working fine.
