The best way to deal with these updates is to go direct
to the KB and download the distribution copy of the
update. I was having problems getting the KB979909
update to install, so I downloaded the distribution copy
and it installed with no problem. It turned out it was the
..Net Framework 2.0 part of the file that was giving the
problem.

I was having issues installing both KB982526 and KB982670. I manually
downloaded them and tried to install them. Got an error from the installer
that the updates were not applicable to my machine. Both updates indicate
they are for Itanium based systems in their notes. My system is definitely
not an Itanium system.


To avoid confusion, please begin a new thread about your specific problem
and computer. State your IE version and full Windows version (e.g., WinXP
SP3; WinXP 64-bit SP2; Vista SP1; Vista 64-bit SP2; Win7; Win7 64-bit) in
your first post. Thank you.

Now is a great time to point you to one of the easiest ways to find
information on problems you may be having and solutions others have found:

I am not showing you that to be sarcastic in any way - but the questions
above have been asked many times during many years and the advantage of the
thousands of computers/servers/web pages out there that synchronize them all
over the world is that the answers to such queries seldom go away. You just
have to barely try and find them.

So you are telling me you did not understand the WikiPedia answers from the
searches I gave and you expect anyone here to be able to answer more simply
and have any specifics to the answer what-so-ever?

The simplest one-sentence explanation I have ever seen (albeit incomplete)
was, "... it is a very large library of already written programming code
that assists in developing solutions for basic, everyday, common problems."

The .NET Framework is something Microsoft and other people can use to make
their applications smaller/more efficient/able to do things they might not
otherwise have access to when writing for Windows OSes. They can use the
built-in functionality of the .NET Framework(s) so they do not have to
include the sometimes extensive code in their own work - and can just call
it. That way their applications are smaller and easier for you to get and
those parts of the applications should have the access they need (since they
are installed by Microsoft/you on your system) to do certain things.

Do you need it? I don't know what you have installed and even if I did - I
wouldn't bother myself to look up every application you have to see if what
you have installed needs any particular version of the .NET Framework for
you. Your video card software (advanced features) may use it. You may have
a screesaver that uses it. You might have some plugins that use it. WHo
knows - other than you and your research on the applications you have
installed on your computer - what you have that utilizes the .NET
Frameworks.

Do you use it? If you don't understand it - then directly - likely not.
It's doubtful - through your lack of understanding - you have written
software that utilizes it. Indirectly - anything you currently use *may*
use it; but if it does - and you don't have the proper version installed -
it will likely ask you to install it during its installation.

BTW - all that was gleamed from reading results from Google Searches. ;-)

From your answer it seems *I* don't *use* it in the sense
of me doing something with it, unless I perform some action such as writing
software. However programs already installed on my PC may need it and use
it. Have I got that right?

I didn't find this so clearly stated on Google as you have in your response.
Perhaps you should write an article for us entitled "How To *Answer*
Questions The Smart Way". You seem to have the know-how.

Hello, what do you mean by "the KB" and what is a "distribution copy"?
(I have a problem with 3 updates that keep coming back, one of which
shows up among the installed updates)

Hello Jurek,

Knowledge Base.

This means a copy of the update which Microsoft offers for distribution
on their Knowledge Base website. You can download the update from there
and then install it manually.
